Dog marking scent indoors

Anyone got any advice to stop a dog urinating and pooing indoors when they're doing it to mark their territory?

This is my bf's dog. Hes fully house trained and 6 years old with no medical issues but seems obsessed with marking his territory everywhere. Would happily pee and poop all over the house, knows what he's doing is wrong but doesn't seem to care

I also have a dog but tbh he does it everywhere he does so it's not just my house/my dog that's causing him to feel like he needs to mark his territory

Everything I've read says not to punish but no advice on how to stop this?

Has he been “done” that’s normally the simplest option for an older dog who’s marking his territory. I think he does need telling off when he’s done it somewhere he shouldn’t. Watch him so you can stop him before he has the chance to go you will see the signs he’s about to e.g sniffing, walking in circles or pacing then put him outside and praise when he does it places he’s allowed.

@YouDoIDo he's not been done. Bf doesn't want to do that.
I've tried keeping an eye on him but it's seems so deliberate that he knows when and when not to do it. Last night it was overnight and this morning was when I was in the shower.
Maybe I'm giving him too much credit but I think he knows exactly what he's doing

Pooing and weeing is not scent marking.

So if he is doing both in the house I would go back to basics and house train. So outside every hour to start with and reward for weeing pooing in the garden

Make sure you clean up any inside accidents with enzymatic cleaner so the smell does not encourage your dog to toilet in the same spot again.

If this is new behaviour get a vet check to make sure no physical reason for it.

Scent marking can sometimes be stopped by neutering but if pooing inside it is not scent marking.

It may be a stress reaction to being in your house with your dog but hard to say from just info on a thread

Get him neutered.

Otherwise, you're fighting a losing battle. Entire dogs scent mark. It's how they mark their territory. Punishing him for doing what comes naturally to him makes no sense - it's like punishing a female dog for leaving blood on her bedding when she's in season.

Your boyfriend has chosen to keep his dog entire and unfortunately this is one of the risks that comes with having an un-neutered dog.

And before someone says - I know not all entire dogs scent, but many do and neutering is often the cheapest and quickest solution to territorial marking.

@ShouldIknowthisalready dogs can mark their territory with poo. It's not common but it does happen.

Thanks everyone, I assumed it was scent marking as he sniffs around to find a spot then cocks his leg (when he's peeing).

Comparing it to a female dog if she was bleeding on furniture is a useful comparison as tbh it was starting to really annoy me when it seemed so deliberate

I don't think it's being around my dog as he does it regardless....anywhere he goes.

Sounds like neutering would be best but in the meantime it's back to basics with toilet training!
