Waterproof dog walking gear

FanGurlll · 05/11/2022 17:40

Hi, so thanks to this hideous weather I'm getting cold, wet and miserable whilst walking the dog.

Please can anyone recommend waterproof coats, trousers etc.... we're out for a good hour or so, so it needs to be pretty resilient.

Thanks in advance.

Really good waterproof gear can cost a lot but in my opinion worth it to purchase once.

Paramo gear is good, not stylish but you will be dry

Anything gortex is also a good idea but you will need to proof it etc

If you dont mind heavy jacket then good old waxed jacket will keep you warm and dry (to warm for me)

if you want to be stylish when dog walking I have no idea Smile

Not the most glamorous garment but I have always had these. It's lightweight enough to wear with just a tshirt underneath if warm or layer up with jumpers underneath if cold. It zips up all the way to my wellies and keeps me dry even in torrential downpours.

I've got these, also use for riding/driving.
Euro-Star Reinis Ladies Long Waterproof Jacket , very long and slim fitting.
Horze Hazel Women's Long Raincoat with Slits, my preferrence as roomier and cheaper.

I have a berghaus goretex coat, a cheap pair of Peter storm waterproof over trousers and a pair of goretex boots. These keep me properly dry when walking over hills for a full day in the lakes.

Alicay · 06/11/2022 16:30

Jenifer, can I ask which brand of gortex boots stay dry. Just looking at my Meindl boots which I invested major money in. Literally had to empty water out of them after walking this morning 😡

JeniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 06/11/2022 17:00

@Alicay my current ones are Lowa.

should have done my research!

I have a Trespass waterproof coat (5000mm) which copes well in the rain. No idea of trousers but coat is just about long enough to reach my boots so I usually come through the rain relatively unscathed. Boots are Dubarry Galway, DH bought them for me approx 15 years ago. The younger me didn't appreciate them at the time, but the older me completely loves them. They've coped with years of crap weather and are so comfortable I can (and do) wear them steadily from Nov to March

Ooh, thank you so much everyone for the replies. Lots to work my way through and look at!

I have these waterproof leggings - acaioutdoorwear.com/collections/all/products/outdoor-softshell-leggings?campaignid=2078496697&adgroupid=80640366430&adid=632471914052&gclid=CjwKCAjwtp2bBhAGEiwAOZZTuLlOIrVestfXY4_YEIOrVj3lwpfoRWbRT_uPOUoGC3-LxE8G7GA8QhoC444QAvD_BwE

Can wear them with normal leggings underneath when its really cold or on their own in wet, mild conditions

Spanielsarepainless · 07/11/2022 15:46

An inherited Barbour and either Hotter Mist Goretex-lined shoes or Aigle wellies. I don't usually bother with waterproof trousers but just change my wet ones, unless it's snowing.

Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree · 07/11/2022 16:50

@Spanielsarepainless I got my first pair of Aigle wellies last year and I absolutely love them. They are the best I have ever had and I practically live in mine.

ElephantInTheKitchen · 07/11/2022 17:20

I have a waterproof cycling jacket that I bought a few years ago from Wiggle. It's thin and apparently impenetrable; I went a size up so that layers fit underneath. No, it's not bright yellow, it's black!

Then waterproof overtrousers; they always seem much of a muchness.

Walking boots are a good balance between keeping your feet warm and dry, unless you're wading through streams.

Not remotely fashionable mind you.

MissMarpleRocks · 07/11/2022 17:31

I wear muckboots in the winter & a Barbour.

FanGurlll · 07/11/2022 21:44

Thanks so much everyone, so many options to look into. I quite like the idea of a waxed jacket but have never had one, so not sure about maintenance etc I might find a local store and have a try on....

Some things I might save up for, but dog is young, we hopefully have many years of walking in the rain ahead of us, so it will be worth the £££

Thanks again!

www.rydale.com/products/ladies-waxed-cotton-twisted-band-hat?variant=3545465028 Bought this earlier in the year and it's been brilliant this week walking the dog. Great in the wind when you can't keep a hood up.

muck boots

gortex coat

I prefer lightweight walking trousers that don't hold the rain rather than waterproof over trousers unless it's really cold. Just purchased some waterproof gaters to try with my walking boots.

Definitelyrandom · 08/11/2022 10:47

Military type, big waterproof poncho - looks daft but folds up small-ish if you want to carry it, just in case. You don't need waterproof trousers with it and you can fit a coat underneath for warmth.

Barbour waterproof hat - ditto in terms of looking daft but it keeps the rain off my glasses.

Brasher walking boots - definitely waterproof.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/11/2022 20:34

Bareback Quebec waterproof boots. Like walking in slippers. Adore them. £195 well spent as I wear them multiple times daily and they take a battering! They're mid calf length so I don't bother with legs but I do have a Jack Murphy longer waxed coat I wear. It has to be re-proofed but it's practical and warm. Always have my bobble hat on in winter, and some riding gloves (for the grip)

I look like a crazy dog lady 😂
