Dog getting cold and shivery post-walk - advice please!

The last week or so my cockerpoo has been really shivery after his walk. He likes to wade through ditches and paddle in ponds, so it’s obviously that he’s damp and then when he goes for his sleep he gets cold. I do dry him off with a towel but he’s impossible to get completely dry. He has also been recently groomed so less insulation than usual.

Any experienced owners - would I be best to get some sort of rain-coat for the walk to keep him a bit dryer or is there a sort of absorbent jumper thing that he could wear after the walk to warm him up? Currently he gets wrapped in a blanket on my lap and it’s lovely for both of us, but I do sometimes need to get on with stuff (work)! Any recommendations welcome before I resort to google.. thanks

You need an Equafleece! They're an absolute life-saver. You can get them just to cover the main body, or to cover basically the entire dog apart from head, feet and bum hole/private area😂Then, when you get back from walks, all you need to do is dry his head and feet.

However if he's prone to matting I would advise making sure he's brushed after he's had his equafleece on as they can cause knots etc. on curly-haired dogs.

If he won't wear an Equafleece, then a doggy dry bag is another option - so, you walk him as normal, wash the mud off afterwards, and zip him up into his drying bag for 20-30 minutes and voila - dry dog and clean furniture!

Second equafleece for wet, muddy walks. Soft and flexible whilst also tough enough to cope with spaniels in the woods!
Easy to wash too.

For post walks drying coats are good and help them warm up and, of course, dry off! I think they look like dressing gowns!

Our Equafleece is 8 years old work loads and still going strong so worth the price.

Fourth recommendation for an Equafleece. My lab is almost totally dry - bit of belly and lower part of legs bit the rest of her is dry and smell free!
Best thing is they're practically made yo measure and we're very helpful when I wasn't sure on sizing.

Equafleece! You can't beat them.

Also, I got my dog a Percy the Pig jumper last year and it's the best indoor jumper ever. It's very soft and it's got a proper underneath park. It's a hoodie though but I just cut the head off...

Equafleece again , my dog has a variety of jumpers / coats / suits and they wear and wash very well . I also have an original doggy bag ( drying bag ) that he goes in if he’s really wet .

Great, thank you all: sounds like an Equafleece is the place to start, and those doggy drying bags look so cute I might have to get one of those too. That would be useful after a bath - though doesn’t look as though they can walk in them so assume they have to be willing to stay put for a bit!

No they can’t walk but mine loves his and if you give them a rub over with the bag before he comes out he comes out all clean and shiny . I do think you need to choose the bag carefully as some of the cheaper ones aren’t as good apparently.

You can get doggy dressing gowns - they're the same material as the bags but they only cover the body so it allows them to walk around and move their legs etc.

My staffie is currently wearing her equafleece indoors, not one of us is brave enough to take it off her, she will throw a strop!

She feels the cold and gets shivery too.

RandomMess · 05/11/2022 14:58

My dog lives in her equafleece inside the house Blush she is always cold so far as she is concerned!

comfortablyfrumpy · 05/11/2022 15:24

Another vote for equafleece - they are fantastic.

I made my dogs drying bags - towelling on the inside, fleece on outside, zip along the back. They are great, especially in the car after a muddy/wet/beach walk.

@thelobsterquadrille A dressing gown style drying robe might work best for us then, he does tend to follow me round until he’s certain I’m not going to do anything exciting! 😂

Sounds like my beagle 😂

He wears one from Amazon - it was only about £15 but it's lasted 2-3 winters now and we've never had any issues.

We have drying coats for post walk, mostly our lab doesn't need the extra insulation when running about on walks. We have a ruff and tumble brand one and a lucky paws one. Both have a nice wide strap to cover the entire belly. She looks adorable in them too

Dog getting cold and shivery post-walk - advice please!
Keepingthingsinteresting · 05/11/2022 17:32

My cockerpoo is just like yours! Equafleeces are great, but if ts not cold can be too walk on very active walks.
mine won’t sit still in a drying bag, so I towel her off then put on a dressing gown coat or one of her jumpers.
Paws and presto are a good brand, microfibres towels & drying coats are great.

SybilThePup · 05/11/2022 23:46

Does no one else use a hairdryer?

We wash her off so she's mud free, rough dry with a towel and then get the hairdryer on her - only takes a few minutes and she's warm and dry.

She loves the hairdryer...she uses it far more than me nowadays, it lives in a corner of the living room now 😂.
