Longest lasting snack for large Lab?

BaconAndAvocado · 05/11/2022 09:43

When younger, snacks like venison tendons would take him ages to finish but now I’m finding it hard to find a snack he doesn’t inhale in minutes!

Any suggestions?

I already use frozen kongs.

I saw someone on MN giving their dog a whole apple, is this a good idea? He loves the chopped apple I put into the kongs.

What bones are you on about. My boy like the hollows ones and I wash and refill with frozen bananas or meat paste and kibble. He loves them.

I am not a big fan of chews/treats but only wanted to comment to say please don't use antlers- too hard for dogs' teeth - they should not be on sale.

No idea how safe all the other things are, like ostrich etc.
I wouldn't trust chews from supermarkets. For a start, they don't last long.

Apples are fine but not in large quantities because they have sugar and seeds can be poisonous (cyanide or similar, I can't remember, they'd have to consume loads for this to be a real issue). Carrots are also sweet.

As a decent rare distraction, safe options would be the odd full apple or carrot; raw bone marrow of appropriate size, a stone hard dry french baguette of appropriate size.

I know it sounds boring ...

The sofa, IME.

We give our lab whole carrots (end cut off) and apple slices and she loves them but they take about 90 seconds to eat.

Instead of giving treats that are essentially junk food why not give him puzzle type toys? You can setup some things at home or buy ones that can be set to varying levels of difficulty. To last a while it has to be easy enough that he gets some but not so easy that he finishes it quickly. You can also get one of those things that releases bits of kibble if he rolls it in a certain way.

icclemunchy · 09/11/2022 02:22

Buffalo horn and cow hooves go down a treat here and last a while. They also love skin on lambs ears but they don't last long!

We got some of those yak cheese things and they both literally ate it like one would eat a chocolate bars. I could of cried for the cost of them 🙈

Justcannot · 09/11/2022 02:40

Agree with @JudyGemston; normal kibble but in a difficult to access place or game worked best for our lab. Cheapest and easiest, but also loudest on our wooden floors, was 2 or 3 kibble in an empty plastic coke bottle or similar, then stand on it to squash it out of shape. She would patiently spend ages, hours sometimes, trying to get them out; upending the bottle, chasing it round the room etc.

Warning- tried it with a friend's dog and he just chewed through the bottle methodically in about 5 minutes, so doesn't work for all of them and not safe if they're a chewer!

VeganFromSveden · 09/11/2022 03:05

Our large dog loves to chew on a whole swede.
I score it a bit first, so there’s quite a strong whiff of it.
often it gets left part way through, and dog goes back to it when ready to.

59p for quite a long time of gnawing!

also not as sweet as carrots, they wouldn’t last long anyway.

tizwozliz · 09/11/2022 11:59

@icclemunchy - we find the turmeric yak chews last for ages, we get petello brand ones. Our lab would get through a yakers brand one in no time previously.

BaconAndAvocado · 09/11/2022 14:48

VeganFromSveden do you mean a raw swede?

OP posts:
VeganFromSveden · 11/11/2022 19:17

Baconandavocado… yes a raw swede.
I can’t imagine how I’d cook, or how long for, a whole raw swede..🤦‍♀️
also, if you did manage to cook it whole, it would no longer be hard, and therefore have no real resistance to a large dogs strong jaw.
you could firstly try giving your dog a small slice of raw swede just go see if the taste is attractive to them.
It’d save wasting a whole one after they’ve licked and or partially nibbled it.

TwoSpoonsofSugar · 12/11/2022 07:29

Coffee bone and root chews are also long lasting chews. Low fat and they don't splinter. Ours have lasted several months. We take it away after some time. They do make a mess though.

autienotnaughty · 12/11/2022 08:14

Mine likes those horns to chew on. But no edible snack lasts more than a few min really other than a large meaty bone.

Yak sticks last forever

My GSD cross gets through them in 10-15 mins!

snowballer · 12/11/2022 08:48

Wow really! My lab who eats in seconds all chews designed to last for hours finally met his match with a rock solid yak stick. He is 13 though so his teeth aren't quite what they were...

shutthedamndoor · 12/11/2022 10:47

Our lab is a champion chewer. We give him (occasionally) dog pretzels. They keep him busy for about 20 minutes, with the added bonus that he doesn't choke when he gets to the last bit, unlike when he tries to swallow long chews.

BaconAndAvocado · 12/11/2022 15:52

VeganFromSveden 🤣thank you for clarifying.
In receipt today of some camel chews. They’re enormous so will save for when we go to a pub/restaurant with the boy.

BigBundleOfFluff · 13/11/2022 13:51

Hi, I have a stellar chewer. I’m currently working through a massive JR Pets order of the longest lasting chews I could find. The winner so far was a collagen chew. I gave it to her fireworks night to distract her abd she chewed for about 3 hours that night, then 3 hours the next day. The beef tails lasted about an hour, the tendons about 45 mins. Todays gooseneck was too crunchy snd she chomped through it in 10 mins. A pizzle ( small one - the seller must have gone to the same school of measurement as my ex husband ) lasts about 30 mins.

GreenManalishi · 13/11/2022 13:58

Having run the full gamut of body parts, we are down to cows hooves now, just because they're reasonably long lasting in that they will last more than one chew session and they are cheap as chips. The Ostrich mega bones also good, but cost per chew is high. Anything else just gets demolished. He's not interested in antlers or those wood roots, I think because they don't do much so there's not much reward.

Raw bones from the butchers or frozen from a pet shop are good, and cheap, look for something weight bearing like a big knuckle, I can chuck that outside and you won't see him for a couple of hours.
