A packet of raisins & 2 nights in the animal hospital

Just a Hand hold please...
Nearly 1 year old medium/large dog ate a packet of raisins out and about today. Realised straight away and had her at the vets 20 mins later where they induced vomiting and confirmed at least 30 raisins in her vomit...
They took bloods & recommended 48 hours on IV and observation at the nearest animal hospital which I agreed to and had her checked in 2 hours later..
Leaving her there was heartbreaking. She's never had a night aaway from me.
Hope she's going to be ok...?!

My dd's lab ate a small box of raisins (snack size), took her to the vets. They induced vomiting, vomited them all up. She has been fine ever since.

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 31/10/2022 23:15

I hope your darling dog is ok OP. The thing with raisins is you just don't know whether your dog is going to react to them until they eat them. It's good that she was seen and treated so quickly.

dontbringthatbirdinhere · 31/10/2022 23:35

She will be ok @chronictonic ❤️ it feels awful leaving them though, I understand.

My little dog ate a mince pie a few Christmases ago and had to stay in overnight. She normally sleeps in our bed and hates strangers so I was very worried, but she was ok. The vomiting injection makes them sleepy and out of it.

DramaAlpaca · 31/10/2022 23:45

Gosh how scary. She's in the right place and now she's vomited hopefully she'll be just fine.

sneezums · 31/10/2022 23:54

My small terrier ate almost a whole box of mince pies and she was fine

AlwaysLatte · 01/11/2022 00:34

Your reaction was so swift, you did so well to get to the vet so quickly. How is she today?

chronictonic · 01/11/2022 07:36

Thanks all. The vet at the animal hospital said they'd call me this morning to let me know how she is.
I slept terribly and had nightmares of missing their call.. then one about her being stolen!

Apparently she was quite settled and ate well through the night... they will update me again later.
I cant beleive how much I miss her!

How is she now?

chronictonic · 01/11/2022 17:30

@vodkaredbullgirl I spoke to them again around 2pm and they said she was fine and all tests were looking normal - they'll repeat bloods tomorrow when it hits the 48 hour mark and all being well I can collect her tomorrow evening...
It's now 24 hours since she ate them

Ddog has consumed all the foods on the dog banned list and been fine. With raisins some dogs are allergic to them basically whereas others have no issue.

With chocolate, my vet told me there's not enough cocoa in mass market milk chocolate to be worried for medium or larger dogs

Yes I had read this too. Honestly I would be amazed if she hasnt eaten raisins before.. we live in a very busy part of london with a high density of toddlers no doubt dropping raisins left right and centre and she spends her life scavenging so would be amazed if she hadn't sampled at least one lost raisin or grape at some point...
I'm flitting between not being too worried on that basis and what we know about how their toxicity works etc and then panicking!
We have a lot of other sad and difficult things going on the moment so I'm on high alert.. really didnt need this!

When I was little our labrador managed to eat loads of raw dough FULL of raisins that were ment for making fruit scones

He was sick a couple of times but was right as rain! No harm came to him at all. I think he must have got them all up when he was sick. My parents didn't take him to the vets, I dont think they realised raisins were toxic to dogs

Hope your dog is Ok and makes a speedy recovery x they are probably just wanting to be on the safe side x

I’m not denying the concern over raisins-I’d have done the same but does anyone actually know of a dog who has come to harm through them?

My staffie was really ill after stealing an easter egg a couple of years ago. It was really scary. It isnt safe, even if your dog was lucky

3WildOnes · 01/11/2022 18:22

Mine stole half a box of mine pies once. Vet just said to keep any eye on him. He was absolutely fine. Think my vet may be more lax compared to most!

itsnotdeep · 01/11/2022 18:24

My friend's (small) dog died after eating raisins.

My dog ate a raisin/chocolate cereal bar and we were also told to go straight to the vet to get him to vomit. He just stayed in a few hours but had daily blood tests after that. (He is quite big and was fine). Luckily the insurance paid out! I was also told that raisins are far more toxic to dogs than chocolate.

Yes - dogs have died because they've eaten raisins.

The problem is that you don't know how your dog is going to react until it's too late. It's not like chocolate where you can figure out the toxicity based on the type of chocolate and your dogs' weight. Some dogs could eat an entire Christmas cake and be fine, but others would get really unwell after eating a few raisins in an oatmeal-raisin cookie.

So vets have to play it safe and treat all dogs the same - which means inducing vomiting and keeping them in for blood tests etc.

Just an update incase anyone in a similar situation comes across this one day.
After 48 hours on IV, charcoal & after normal blood test results at the animal hospital, we got our lovely girl back and she's fine.
I'm glad I took the precaution, & grateful for Pet insurance!

Glad to hear she’s ok. It’s something you can never protect them against 100% unless you keep them wrapped up away from everyone forever.

So glad she is fine and home ☺️

My spaniel ate a packet of progesterone hormone suppositories that I was given for pregnancy when he was 1, I took him to the vet who kept him in for 24 hours and told me he'd be fine just waxy poo and probably a little bit moody 😂

Theunamedcat · 05/11/2022 15:35

We had a spaniel and a collie that ate the travel sickness pills including the packet on a bank holiday weekend when the chemist was closed pre Internet poisen people weren't picking up the phone poor vet even tried her friend who worked in the chemist to find out what was in them so induced vomiting and charcoal days later turns out they were non toxic to dogs 😂 my mom went mad about the cost my dad said she should have put them away 😂
