Wet or Dry food for puppy?

Recently brought home our miniature schnauzer pup. She has been naturally bread so has only ever been fed on raw food. The breeder has given us lots of info on raw feeding, ratios of meat/bone/offal etc so for the first few weeks we stuck with that.

Took her to the vets this week, she has put on weight as expected and all is well. I mentioned to the vet she is raw fed and is that okay and he said they don't recommend a raw diet, and that dry complete food is a better choice from a nutrition perspective and also less change of bacteria, etc.

Was interested to hear other dog owner's opinions, could I give a mixture of both?

Very rarely will a vet recommend raw food, but if you do want to change the dogs food, a good place to start is a website called allaboutdogfood.co.uk

On that website you can compare foods based on nutrition and cost. It's a really handy website and I found it really helpful in the early days when mine was a small puppy.. SmileSmile

You can give a mixture but after extensive research and speaking to our vet, we decided against raw food. Its too much faff for us, too much risk of illness etc.

I like giving ours some human/natural food though so we've compromised on kibble but with some very easy toppers - a raw egg, half a tin of sardines, some liver or chicken etc.

Most vets won't recommend raw food.

However if your puppy is thriving on a raw diet I would 100% keep her on it. It's an excellent, natural way to feed your dog.

No vets approve raw, no idea why but they all peddle royal canin that they also sell....

devilinareddress · 29/10/2022 13:15

I would keep the pup on raw if it's doing well on it tbh. If not, people like Wolfworthy, or Millie's Wolf-heart. Both get good reviews. Don't just change to a cheap kibble, just a good quality one.
You could also, change to a complete raw, so you don't have to measure out everything.

Ignore the vet and keep on a raw diet

Dry food is also better for their teeth. I'd probably follow the advice if the vet if they gave recommended you come off raw food.

devilinareddress · 29/10/2022 13:29

I'm sorry, no, dry food is NOT better for teeth.
Definitely not

Raw is MUCH better for teeth than dry.

Rhino94 · 29/10/2022 13:39

please look up how much vets actually get of nutritional training! They get barely anything and that is by royal canin/ hills which produces low quality food!
raw is definitely the best, if she’s going well on stick with it!

Rhino94 · 29/10/2022 13:41

To add- if your worried about the balance then there are a lot of great complete raw foods on the market, pop to your local pet shop they will know more in regards to nutrition!

Thank you all for your replies. I've been buying complete raw meals from Rawtdoor so I think i'll stick with that for now.

Mixing kibble with a meat/fish topper is an interesting option, I hadn't thought of that one.

I will definitely look up the website suggested too.
