Are there any good websites that give guidance by breed on how long to walk your dog for daily? I have googled and every website gives very different advice.

Many thanks!

You can go by the 5 minute for every month rule for walking. Although we’ve found with our puppy, although not your breed, a 20 minute walk was always longer meeting other dogs, people and sniffing, but we tried doing walks no longer than 30 minutes twice a day until our puppy was 6 months.

Thanks, I was following this but he's an adult now. The full walking time recommended for adults seems to vary wildly. Some websites recommend one 30 minute walk, other two 30 minute walks and others recommend 2 hours so I feel a bit confused xx

My friend has run a marathon with her cockapoo. They will do as much as you train them too.

Remember they may be small but they are a mix of 2 highly active working breeds.

I would say they need at least an hour walk a day, but take your cues from your dog.
Is he restless or destructive in the house?

lessthanathirdofanacre · 26/10/2022 21:43

I think it very much depends on the individual dog. What is his energy level like? How big is he?

KangarooKenny · 26/10/2022 21:43

I would say an hour a day split into two walks, with a bit more at the weekend.

I have an 18 month old cocker spaniel.

He usually gets a walk of 45min to an hour everyday and I try to give him plenty of time off the lead during that. That's almost all off road so plenty of sniffing time and meeting other dogs. That seems to where them put a bit more.

That seems to be enough for him but he'd happily go more.

Someone advised me to mix it up. So not the same time every day, not the same walks. Don't get them expecting something that you then can't get out of.

Thanks all, really helpful. I have just let my dog guide me. His week varies but he gets one 2 hour long walk a week with me which is pretty much completely off lead through the local fields. The rest of the week is usually about an hour a day - though the amount of off lead time varies depending where we go.

Today I only managed one 40 minute on lead walk with him. I'm not feeling great so is all I could manage. I felt so guilty I thought I would Google it but they advice was so varied.

He not destructive, although if any socks are left about they will become his! Also some of the kids toys if they leave them lying about because I think he assumes they are his.

Depends entirely on the dog.

Some genuinely need a good two hours (plus) a day or they become unhappy, vocal, restless and destructive.

Other dogs are absolutely fine on half that. As long as your dog is happy, fit and a good weight and size, I wouldn't worry too much. Given the mix, a cockapoo should really be capable of going all day, but that doesn't necessarily mean you want it to Grin

EdithStourton · 27/10/2022 08:33

For some dogs, time spent using their brains satisfies them more than a walk. So long as your dog is happy at home, you're probably doing okay.

The odd short walk when circumstances are against you is absolutely fine.

Incidentally, I have found zero scientific evidence for the 'five minute rule'. If anyone has some, I'd appreciate a link.

Mine is crazy. You can walk her for hours, throw the ball indefinitely... however if I play "find it" games with her she'll tire after about 30 minutes.

Should add she is a mini Poodle X - very clever, bright dog that needs more than just a walk in the park.
