Do they work? And if so which one do you recommend.

Thank you!

Only heard of repellent sprays for chewing not house training. Do you actually mean enzyme cleaners which fully break down the odours (that our noses can't detect) so that the pet doesn't then see it as a toileting spot?

Simple solutions is good, I use some kennel disinfectant when mopping hard floors as more cost efficient. Biological washing enzymes also does same.

Yes, maybe! My mum was saying about them yesterday when she visited to find me in tears yet again about the pup. I'll try that one, thanks. We have enzymatic carpet cleaner which clearly works as he wants to go on the laminate

We use the RSPCA no wee spray or something it’s called. It’s from b&m £1.99, it definitely gets rid of the smell!

what you are looking for us the enzymatic cleaner. Basically they learn to go to the toilet by finding somewhere that smells of wee, where their sense of smell is so good you need to use a certain cleaner to get rid of all traces of the smell- it then makes it much easier

And the constant going inside? Our sprays get rid of the smell for our noses af least, but not working well enough to get him to stop!

The only way to stop them going inside is to be really persistent with training.

That means - outside every 20 minutes when awake, every time they start sniffing or circling indoors, and after every single meal, play session, drink, nap and sleep, plus whenever they wake in the night.

It also helps to restrict where they have access - so if you can't have your eyes on them all the time, a crate or pen is a good option, or you can use a tether to keep them attached to you.

I think so because he hasn’t had accidents in the same place. Usually only because we haven’t got to the door quickly enough, he takes himself off to the door now when he needs to go, we just need to master him telling us if we don’t notice him sitting by the door - thinking of getting some bells but I honestly think he’d just chew them!

Puppies will always have accidents inside. You can massively reduce the number of them with positive reenforcement - lots of approaches that can be googled. Otherwise it just takes time, different for each dog, but they will learn to go outside when they’re old enough to. We popped puppy out after every sleep and every meal, said a set phrase every time they went where we wanted them to and then just cleared up any messes till they learnt. Never tell them off - they’re far more likely to learn to fear you than than toilet trained. If you catch them mid-wee then pick them up and pop them outside but gently and kindly.

Wolfiefan · 24/10/2022 17:44

That’s not how you toilet train. A puppy doesn’t know there’s a right and a wrong place to go to the toilet. So you have to make sure it’s outside when it needs to go. Take it out after eating, drinking, playing, sleeping and at least every 30 mins. If it goes then praise. If it doesn’t then back in but watch like a hawk and hurry back out at the first sign.

Maybe it might help if you explained what you are doing, so that people might be able to spot where you need to tweak your process to improve your success.
