Dog friendly short break

roaringwater · 23/10/2022 23:56

Can anyone recommend a really amazing dog friendly short break in the UK?

Here's my ideal criteria:

Nobody else is nearby. At all.
It sleeps 2 and there's space for my very large dog.
There's no sheep.
I can open the door in the morning and DDog can go straight out and run around (under supervision, obviously).
It isn't a tent.
It's in Devon, Dorset, Somerset, New Forest, Forest of Dean, Wales (I love the north of England but the dog does not travel well 🤮)

If anyone knows any secret places, please, please share!

Until you said the West Country I had lots of suggestions for you. But they do exists so don’t worry. Hope someone comes along with suggestions for you soon. My suggestions are all wales, Scotland and Yorkshire I’m afraid

@SarahSissions
No, no... Wales was on my list!!
Please would you be kind enough to share any suggestions (maybe not Scotland as it really is a long way for us) as he might grow out of the travel sickness 🤞

Try here, there might be a perfect place for you!

GeorgiePorge · 24/10/2022 13:58

Try National Trust cottages .. or if your budget can stretch Landmark Trust.

both do w/e breaks in remote locations and most properties are dog friendly

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 24/10/2022 13:58

Particularly this one, straight into the open forest:

Is Norfolk too far?

roaringwater · 24/10/2022 14:47

@WhatATimeToBeAlive that one looks amazing! Thank you 🙂

@tizwozliz Norfolk is probably a bit far but it's part of the country I'm very keen to visit so any recommendations would be great.

Great suggestion - I've had a look at some NT cottages this morning.

This site should let you filter out your requirements, they have loads of info about whether suitable for reactive dogs etc.

I think they possibly only offer short breaks outside of high season

This is such a gorgeous place and me and dh were seriously considering booking a midweek stay next year (I love you aren't stuck to Sat to Sat check in and out and can stay as short or long a time as you like) but they don't allow dogs upstairs under any circumstances :(

Our dog used to sleep downstairs but when our elderly cat started having issues he had to be shut in downstairs and she came to sleep in our room. It only started a few years ago but she can no longer sleep downstairs even now our cat has passed. We found this out when we were away in the highlands this year and she was so upset she found her inner wolf and howled for the first time at 10 years old since we brought her home at 8 weeks! Luckily we were on email contact with the cottage owners who allowed us to have her in with us, but it doesn't feel these people would be as amenable.

If anyone knows of a similar cottage without the no dogs upstairs rule can you post a link on this thread? I'd be most grateful. By the beach or walking distance from a beach would be a bonus, near South Wales coast, Norfolk coast, Kent or Sussex coast or North Devon coast

Ivedonethisthreetimesalready · 26/10/2022 09:51

There are several in Wales where you have you own wood and 32 acres all to yourself.

Trouble is they are usually booked up two years in advance but worth booking.

Not going to link though as it is already hard to get a booking Smile

Wales generally has more spacious areas for dogs but no sheep is going to be harder althought the Pembroke beaches are huge and no sheep there!

Pack Holidays in Norfolk might be worth a look (I dont go to Norfolk much so happy to push these ones!)

Little Dumpledate Farm love dogs (may be sheep) but does have fully enclosed garden and field for the dogs to exercise in.

tizwozliz · 26/10/2022 10:35

@longtompot - the cottages on the East Ruston site above don't have limitations on where dogs can go in the house. All on or near the Norfolk coast. Pack holidays as mentioned above is another Norfolk one.

There's also a Facebook group if you're on Facebook called Really really multi dog friendly holidays for dogaholics where you can ask for suggestions. We only have the one dog buy she sleeps on our bed so we need places where dogs are allowed in the bedroom and then we take our own bedding.

It's a bit of a nightmare sifting through rules otherwise and lots of places say they're dog friendly but then present with a list of rules on arrival.

CMOTDibbler · 28/10/2022 19:46

@tizwozliz We stayed in two East Ruston cottages this summer (St Benets and The Walnut) and loved not having any dog restrictions at all. Two very different properties, but both were great

TwoSpoonsofSugar · 29/10/2022 06:21

Little Wareham Cottage in North Devon meets your criteria. There's also a river on the edge of their extensive property if your dog enjoys the water.

Owners are the most lovely and kind people and have their own dog too.

No connection other than we've previously stayed here and had the best time.
