Puppy classes are good for puppy socialisation and for general guidance on dos and don’t. It set us in the right direction.
However, I found a course of six wasn’t enough and our original trainers didn’t do a follow on course so I changed trainers. They took a slightly different approach, and used terms slightly differently, so we all had to adapt. I th8nk I’m now trying to do a mixture of the two approaches, probably not successfully.
I’ll be honest, I do find puppy training hard work. Didn’t help that dh’s approach was different to the trainer, and every YouTube clip said something different as well. For every approach you take, there’s someone preaching the opposite. Also, books like “Easy Peasey..’ make it sound simple.
It is a case of repetition, repetition and practice, and every time you’re with pup, it’s a training session, even if it’s just getting them to sit and wait for their food. However, I admit, I have shed tears from frustration, and almost on a daily basis at one point. I thought I was doing everything right, but it wasn’t working. I don’t feel we’re there yet, but walks are now enjoyable rather than frustrating, for example (well most of the time!).
sorry, that’s a bit long.
