Dog with diarrhea

Hellocatshome · 18/10/2022 18:42

Strangely for a lifelong dog owner this is the first time any if my dogs have ever had the shits which considering what some of them ate is a miracle in itself.

Anyway current ddog has diarrhea. Took a little while to narrow down the culprit as we also have several cats but I now have evidence DDog is the one.

After a Google I assume the procedure is fast for 24 hrs then boiled white rice and chicken for a few days. Do I need to do anything else apart from buy more kitchen roll and disinfectant 🤢

I think the advice to fast them is generally out-dated these days?

I've certainly never fasted mine, they just get chicken and rice at meals and it's always cleared up within a day or two.

Hellocatshome · 18/10/2022 19:04

Oh is it? Thats good to know I wasn't looking forward to the puppy eyes begging to be fed.

Scrambled egg worked with my dog x

FartOutLoudDay · 18/10/2022 19:08

Pro-kolin probiotic paste helps settle their stomach too - speaking as a first time rescue owner who is far too familiar with stomach issues!

GhostCastle · 18/10/2022 19:21

Pro-kolin and tinned pumpkin really helped our dog when he had diarrhoea. I used to give him boiled chicken and rice, but it didn’t help the last time he was poorly.

UhhhhhhhOK · 18/10/2022 19:23

Yes prokolin. If there’s also blood in poo, gastro dog food as well, or chicken and rice. The latter didn’t work for us.

CMOTDibbler · 18/10/2022 19:29

Is it just really loose, or is there any blood or mucus? If just loose, and not a puppy, I'd do pro-kaolin and no treats/chews for a couple of days and see how it goes. If there is blood/mucus then a trip to the vets to check for giardia or worse

Its just very loose, this morning there was some lumps but this afternoon it basically brown water. No blood or mucus so far.

Oh also not a puppy he is a rescue but we have had him 4 years and he was an adult when we got him and never a problem with his tummy before.

I'd go for plain rice, with white fish and if you can get pumpkin or butternut squash and puree it, that really helps too.

Mine can't have chicken so this is my go to if he eats something grim (sun-dried maggot ridden hedgehog anyone last time 🙄) & gives himself the trots.

PestorPeston · 18/10/2022 19:36

Make sure you keep him hydrated. Check his gums and scruff.

ihoeihoeihoe · 18/10/2022 19:40

I’d still fast him even if it’s just for tonight. You need to give his stomach time to recover. Even feeding him bland whilst he is still going with liquid poop will go straight through him. Feed him tomorrow, very small amounts throughout the day so his body can digest it slowly. Ideally small amounts of chicken or fish, no rice. We give ours a slice of bread in quarters throughout the day also and it works for us if just a generic upset stomach

Quveas · 18/10/2022 19:49

Lots of good advice here except for... it's a really great idea to know why your dog has the problem. Just an upset tummy, no problem. Parasites - what you do or don't feed them will be irrelevant, and let untreated may damage or kill the dog. If you know why your dog is not well, then self help is great. If you don't, get proper advice from a vet. You can save money by getting cheaper treatments where possible. You can save a life by not ignoring something more serious.

Hellocatshome · 18/10/2022 20:07

I suspect its from bin raiding which is a habit we haven't been able to break. We normally put a brick on top of the bin when we go to bed but DH forgot on Sunday night and the contents of our bin were spread across the kitchen floor on Monday morning.

Chappie tin food should work.
If this lasts longer than a day, maximum two, please take him to the vet in case he has an infection.
One of my dogs caught something , I can't remember the name, but apparently it spreads through water like drinking from ponds, puddles etc. it was awful, basically water instead of poo within days. Easily treated but, poor girl went downhill pretty fast and also became lethargic.
Hopefully yours hasn't got this.

faffadoodledo · 19/10/2022 07:51

The chicken and rice thing always makes me chuckle (darkly). When ours was young he had an awful tummy so we were advised chicken and rice. The problem kept going on and on. He was fine in himself but boy his bottom wasn't. Turned out the actual problem was allergy to chicken d'oh!

Same here! 🙈

For the pp ref. puddles/water could have been leptospirosis? Annual booster should include L2 and/or L4 for this. Spread by rat urine and people get it too. There was a case of an Olympic rower who caught it in the Thames and sadly died 😪 (Andy Holmes)

Branster · 19/10/2022 11:25

@RedBonnet no it was something starting with letter P I think.
Quite a few dogs around here had it at the time. It was in the summer.
Apparently it spreads between them but water is the source somehow.
The vet gave her that paste in a syringe for tummy problems, anti sickness tablets and some injection. I really can't remember what everything was, we were really worried for her.
Diarrhoea for a couple of days which didn't solve with anything at home then in the space of extra 10 hours lots of trying to poo but all watery which just became very very watery in small quantities and lethargic too. It's all a fog in my head now.

Hellocatshome · 19/10/2022 11:51

No more poos today apart from one I discovered in the small hours on my trip to the toilet. Feeling a bit sorry for himself though.
