Should I claim on insurance for small vet bill?

Ddog ate some fire lighters and had an emergency vet appointment at cost of £300. Should I claim this back on his insurance considering it's a relatively small amount? The excess is £110 so I would get £190 back, but I'm worried that claiming will effect next years premium (due august 2023) . Insurance is with pet plan, covered for life classic + policy if it's relevant.

I am with petplan and have claimed for large and very small amounts.

My premiums go up because of the age of the dog each year.

I am sure when I took my policy out they said prices do not increase for claims (but will rise based on age).

I would claim for anything larger than the excess; otherwise what's the point in paying for insurance?

WeAllHaveWings · 15/10/2022 13:24

Petplan goes up every year with age of pet, not with claims. I would claim if a £300/bill.

Our cats are with Petplan and I’d claim for that amount , it’s so easy with PetPlan and they pay out really quickly .

@thelobsterquadrille good point!

@BiteyShark & @WeAllHaveWings I didn't know the price went up according to age but this makes sense.

Thanks everyone I've made the claim online.

Glad to see you have submitted a claim. I would have done too. Under a,tenner, probably not!

Our 9 year old lab is now £84/month 😱, started at £28/month when he was a pup and has gone up £5-£8/month each year.

It gets a bit eyewatering as they get older. We 've had our moneys worth though with an operation one year (£4k), MRI scans, tests (£3k) another year and a few £300-£400 claims mostly for gastro type things and once for a ripped ear.

I wouldn't claim. My dog is 7 and her insurance has gone up from £20 a month over the years and is now £240 a month (well was - we cancelled). We have claimed in the past for large vet bills but paid everything else.

The OP is with PetPlan and as nearly every poster has said PetPlan do not increase premiums with claims. They do increase premiums with age whether you claim or not.
