Many runny poos on walks.

Over the last few weeks it has become more and more difficult to cope with DDog on walks.
He does one normal poo then wants to stop and do many more liquid ones every few minutes. It is very difficult to pick up after him and if I'm honest it's putting us off doing our usual park and riverside walks as its just not fair to other people if we can't pick it all up.
We do carry water as well to try and swill it away.
We also have to bathe him after every walk.
When he is exercised in the garden at home (couple of acres) this isn't an issue at all and he just does normal poo.
The vet says there is nothing physically wrong and he may be scent marking but he is 15 years old and hasn't done this previously, why now?
We feel so sorry for him because I know he misses his regular outings.
Has anyone encountered similar and how did you deal with it?

Has he become intolerant to his food maybe? Try keeping him on a more restricted diet and see if that helps. My dog can't tolerate chicken and I am finding turkey much better. I made a turkey puree for him, cook a couple of turkey steaks with a carrot and quarter of a potato just covered with water, simmer for 30 minutes, blend it into a puree and serve warm with rice and his biscuits. He's much better now.

Try feeding him a diet for "elderly dogs" (Wainwright at pets at home) and choose one with no wheat, ours like the lamb and rice and chicken and rice ones.

But TBH, at 15, a dog will usually show some change and deterioration. He will probably eat less, sleep more and want less excercise.

I think a change in poo/wee is fairly common as they get older, sadly.

Have you moved him onto a food for elderly dogs? Could it be that too much exercise is a bit stressful and painful for him, perhaps?

FruitPastilleNut · 09/10/2022 08:47

Could it just be stress? Something bothering him now that didn't used to?

Opposite end of the age spectrum as we have a puppy...but we struggle with liquid poo on walks after we've been in the car to get there. If we walk from home, poos are perfect every single time. If we go in the car to the park or beach (only 5 minutes), poos are liquid.

She seems quite chilled in the car so any stress isn't obvious but it's the only difference and happens literally every time so we're pretty confident it must be this.

Exercise does cause loose poos in some dogs - ( think of runners tummy) it may be as he is getting older this is an issue.

Also over feeding can cause looser poos as the day goes on - does he need less food now he is older?

However as it is new in an older dog I would think the above reasons are unusual, I guess if it is just when out on walks (and the vet has given him a clean bill of health )maybe shorten the walks for a while and see if that makes a difference.

or look at timing of food and his walks could that be altered?

Walk first feed after?

Jellybean23 · 09/10/2022 09:47

Are you giving him Dreamies dog treats? They used to go straight through my SIL's dog.

serin · 09/10/2022 11:05

Thank you all for your ideas. He has never had Dreamies and we don't tend to give him food treats on walks.
I will look into older dog food and the timing of his meals.
Very interesting about over walking him and exercise causing looseness. This makes sense to me. At home he has plenty of space but he just potters about, on walks he zooms around like a nutter.
I will definitely try shorter walks.
