Puppy: "Please may I go out?"

Ok so I WISH it were that simple! If my patio doors are open, the puppy is great at going outside to do her toilets. But now it's getting colder, I'm finding that she's toileting in the house because the doors are shut. She doesn't even make a move towards the door - she just does it! And even worse - she eats her poo -I think because she eats it to hide it!

So I've bought the bells but I'm not having much luck. Because of the shape of my living room, it's hard to have eyes on her 24/7. Any suggestions? She's 17 weeks

@gunner1510 thank you for responding! I will try moving the pad. I have about 1.5x5 metres to pay with so it's not too small. I don't think he's been scared, and he's fairly fearless. We do sometimes pop him out at lunchtime but with cold/wet weather coming using the pad again would be really helpful!

No worries! I currently feel your pain! I often wish they could talk so they could say what exactly is wrong!
but it could be anything, a smell, a noise, that’s made him scared. Try moving it to a different spot and putting treats on it or using treats to coax him onto it once moved and see if that works. Hopefully it’ll work!

And my dog is a breed that is allegedly fearless of everything but wow she can be a wimp over weird things! 🤣 I still love her to bits though!

I taught my staffy to ring a string of bells at 10 weeks old. I practised about 3/4 times a day for 3/4 days. He never had a accident again in the house from just under 11 weeks old.

He is nearly 2 now and uses the bells still - for the toilet or if he just wants to go outside for a wonder in garden .

I just YouTube's how to teach him and followed it and it worked perfectly

That said Stafford's are very clever and easy to train so that definitely would of helped.

Yes, outside every hour and if the 'accidents' jn the house stop increase by 10 mins a day. If they don't stop decrease to half an hour.

So he won't need to alert you. Look for circling and sniffing too.

Ours doesn't need to alert us as he has a routine now. Although sometimes just stands at the back door nose against glass!

Our has a routine morning straight out and after meals and then before bed and as and when in between we can just tell he stands about looking awkward. Old ddog would parade up and down.

Thank you all. She sleeps in the crate and holds for about 7 hours so she can do it!!!

Nighttime is different though because, like us, they don't really feel the need to go when they're fast asleep.

There's no quick fix - you just have to take her out regularly and have your eye on her at all times inside. When you leave the room, take her with you or pop her in her crate - or take her outside beforehand so she has a chance to go before you leave her unsupervised.

The bell really worked for our pug who wasn't great at letting us know to go outside, we pressed it every time to go out, he was about 20 weeks and he got it after a couple of goes so we were lucky. Our 8 month old pup has never picked it up really, he is so big he just opens the door himself 😭
