Does anyone work for a rescue centre….

We want to add a suitable dog to our household, I work from home. We already have DDog and DD so it’s not straightforward.

I started volunteering with a local rescue in my spare time. Anyway, we fell in love with a dog we were walking. I spoke to the staff and they said, yes go ahead and enter a form. I thought it best to wait a little awhile, so we left it a fortnight to think things over. Today I entered the rescue form, had a lighting fast reply to say the dog has been moved to another rescue to give it a better chance of being homed and to let them know if I want a different dog.

We’re so upset, there’s nothing I can do is there? I presume they can’t tell me where the dog is and the dog is likely the other side of the country.

Could I ask where the dog is? Or is it futile.

I didn’t even know this was a thing, is for stats?

Forgot to add, do rescues require a certain number of applications before considering rehoming?

I think your mistake was waiting. They thought you weren't interested. Surely someone will tell you where he is.

Ihatethenewlook · 03/10/2022 20:08

There shouldn’t be an issue with telling you where it is. Not sure why you left it two weeks though

NoSquirrels · 03/10/2022 20:09

Why did you wait to put your application in? Just have a chat with them and ask if you can know where the dog has been moved to and if they can let the other rescue know you are really keen.

HairyMcLarie · 03/10/2022 20:11

Well of course you can ask! GDPR doesn't apply to dogs!

Rescue dogs don't get moved that far so you could also try looking at local rescue websites or Facebook pages for the dog.

Also look at the previous rescue centres Facebook posts and website as I know round here they always say where they have been transferred to.

I didn’t want it to look like we were rushing in. They’ve been asking for fosters as if they do a straight rehome, it looks bad if the dog is later returned. The dog had been there for around 8 months, believe me, I’m kicking myself. I was trying to be responsible. I don’t think they will tell me due to stats purposes or likely the dog is hundreds of miles away.

Maybe I’ll email and ask.

Rescues are desperate to rehome dogs. From their POV, you expressed interest and then appeared to change your mind because you didn’t even fill in the form. i would imagine it doesn’t seem ‘responsible’ to them, it just seems odd. You were keen, then you weren’t. Why didn’t you offer to foster?

Suzi888 · 03/10/2022 20:28

@HairyMcLarie I’ve looked- it just says “placed with another centre”.

I’ve emailed them, I don’t think I’ll get a reply. It’s local authority, so would expect some kind of response.

OP posts:
Suzi888 · 03/10/2022 20:30

@NoSquirrels we did. No response at all. I asked them if they need a certain number of applications, but had no response.

That sounds like they e moved the dog to another local authority centre. Check out which ones are in your area then look at each of the centres Facebook and webpages to see if the dog is there. Maybe call them if no luck.

You have nothing to lose by asking!! As PP says they are desperate to rehome dogs. Also why would they withhold info for 'stats'?! Just do it!

Suzi888 · 03/10/2022 20:35

@HairyMcLarie I don’t know, why do they move the dogs around… 😫
I work for the LA too, everything is about stats. I’ve emailed them. Obviously closed now… I’ll update tomorrow.

I’ll look at other LA areas- thank you.

local authorities will often pass on to rehoming charities. I don’t see why they wouldn’t tell you

outtheshowernow · 03/10/2022 20:52

If I were you I would go In there and speak to the manager of the centre. Ask them where the dog is If they won't tell you ask if they will call the new place and say they have an offer of a hoMe. Good luck

Suzi888 · 03/10/2022 21:02

I’ll ring tomorrow, I don’t think they’ll tell me. I don’t want to be a dick and ask what on what legal basis they’re refusing to disclose the dogs whereabouts. Plus the clock is ticking, I’ve been so stupid. All I’ve done is think about this dog, DD is in bed so I’m going to have a cry.
@outtheshowernow that’s a good idea, they aren’t telling me anything then. They have the form they can forward it on.
Thanks all.

It's common for LA pounds to move dogs to other rescue centres once they've done their 7 days as a stray; frankly I'm surprised they held onto a dog for 8 months.

It's unlikely the dog has gone too far, and it's probably a well trodden route; check with the other charitable rescue centres in the county and neighbouring counties. I'd suggest ringing rather than just checking the websites as there can be a delay before the dog is uploaded onto the website.

Suzi888 · 04/10/2022 06:30

@SurpriseWombat Thanks - I’ll ring this morning. They have lots of dogs that have done their 7 days and then go up for rehoming. They take a photo for social media once the dog is handed to them, then caption to say if no one claims the dog it will be rehomed. Quite a few of them have been there for months. This particular dog hit six months and I wonder if that was the trigger.

The rescue does not appear to respond to many sm comments and when you email you don’t get an automated response so you’ve no idea if they’ve received it. It seems a bizarre way to attract the public to view/rehome dogs as they’re so lacking in communication. Their online reviews echo this.

I’m in Wales, there are so many centres. It’s going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack. I’ve emailed a few of the other centres tonight and I’ll ring around tomorrow.

Update.

Rang the LA, they told me where she is and looked at her profile. It’s changed now to adult only home, we aren’t sure why… Rang the rescue where she is and they said they have to do that as the owner never gave any information on her, but not to be deterred as they’ll assess her and criteria may change and as we already have a bond and they can verify this with the LA to go ahead and enter a form.

So the form is done and we shall see if we are successful or not.

Best of luck to you!

Suzi888 · 04/10/2022 12:14

Thank you @SarahSissions what will be will be. Just hope she gets a loving home, even it can’t be with us. She will get more coverage now as she’s moved in to the care of Dogs Trust. They’ve just amended her profile not that I’m stalking to say that she does get on well with dogs but would rather not share her home with a dog.
