Help - at the end of my tether

I have two dogs, the youngest is driving me insane peeing everywhere. You can leave anything on the floor because he will wee up it. In the last two days I've discovered he's peed up DCs school bags, the ironing pile, the laundry basket, up my new washing machine and dryer. I'm forever finding dried up wee stains where he's done it and no one has noticed. I'm the only person that notices it and ends up with the job of cleaning it. I know it's not my older dog as he's never done it.

I'm at the end of my tether with it, I'm beginning to resent ever getting him as the amount of things he pees up is getting out of hand, My kitchen floor is ruined from it. Nothing works with getting him to stop.

I have never had a dog that does this, my OH treats him like a baby all the time and doesn't see anything wrong with it. I'm sick of the house smelling of wee - I don't know what else to do or try. I've bought sprays that supposedly get rid of the smell and deter them from doing it. He gets let out regularly but still does it.

I've come home from work today and he's peed up the corner of the cupboard, the washing machine and the dryer again. He hasn't been kept in all day as my neighbour has let them out for me today and they've been in the garden all day!

What is the dog's routine? Is he getting regular walks for peeing outdoors? Being let out into the garden unsupervised doesn't always mean they'll be good and pee outdoors - especially as he thinks he can get away with a nice warm wee indoors instead.

A dog doesn’t know he has to pee outside unless it’s taught. How old is the dog?

mumto2teenagers · 03/10/2022 16:50

How old is he and how old is your older dog.

If he is a puppy, could just need more training, has he always done this or was he trained to go outside but it is a more recent thing.

As your other dog gets older maybe he can't go for as long without needing a wee, so I wouldn't automatically assume it is the younger one.

If not a training issue, I would speak to the vet to rule out anything medical.

everylittlehelp5 · 03/10/2022 16:59

He's 3, he gets regular walks to wee outdoors. My older dog is 8, I've never had the problem with him ever - even as a puppy he was house trained from the start, apart from the odd accident.

Use a proper kennel cleaner like Glimmermann kennel cleaner for a deep clean.

Then teach your dog to go outside.

SarahSissions · 03/10/2022 17:14

like others, a proper deep clean with an enzymatic cleaner and then back to basics with house training. Keep a lead handy and when you see him go to go indoors a quick “ah huh” slip the lead on and take straight out. Lots of praise outside. Dogs always give a sign they are going to pee- keep your eyes pealed and for now don’t leave stuff on the floor of the room he’s in

confused162 · 03/10/2022 17:16

Is he neutered? Is he maybe marking everywhere ?

Floralnomad · 03/10/2022 17:20

You need to go back to basics with house training and make sure you’ve cleaned all the inside wee spots with proper enzyme cleaner . It’s not the dogs fault if he’s never been properly taught .

forumsempronii · 03/10/2022 17:38

This sounds more like scent marking than weeing.

Dogs that are stressed are more likely to mark in their own home. Castration can stop scent marking if it has not become a habit.

I would get a vet check and discuss this with them.

mountainsunsets · 04/10/2022 05:32

It sounds more like scent marking if he's peeing up things.

Is he neutered?
Does he get along with your older dog?
Does he show any other signs of stress or unhappiness?
Is he a generally happy and confident boy?

everylittlehelp5 · 04/10/2022 07:11

He gets along great with my other dog, they're pretty much inseparable. He shows no signs at all of distress, he's a happy little boy who gets lots of attention.

I think it more than likely is scent marking, he isn't neutered. I am going to call the vets today and make an appointment to discuss it I think.

most unneutered dogs don’t pee inside and some neutered dogs do. If hes been doing it for a while you’ll still need to train him to stop him doing it regardless of whether you now have him neutered. It may help- but it isn’t going to fix it overnight

mountainsunsets · 04/10/2022 11:33

Neutering isn't guaranteed to fix marking behaviour - especially if it's now been going on for several years.

It may help but it likely won't be a quick fix.
