Getting puppy better at asking to go out

Hi there

I have a 9 month Coton; got her in March this year. Overall her potty training is really pretty good - so for instance if I take her out last thing before bed and ask her to pee she does on command, so we have no nighttime accidents.

However, over the summer I did leave the back door open so she could come and go out to the garden. Maybe I made a rod for my own back, as she didn't have to ask to go. Now it's colder and the door isn't open we've had a few cases where she's had a pee by the back door. I think generally it's my fault - this morning she was snoozing and I went and had a bath. While I was in the bath she went to the back door and then had a little pee. So she's not very good at waiting for me, or asking me.

I'm going to get a dog door installed but wondered if people had advice on getting their dog to be more proactive in asking to go out? I have bells on the backdoor but they have not really taken off as a concept:-) Maybe while she's still v young I just need to keep being more on top of things, and anticipate better. But any advice welcome

If she pees on command at night use this to your advantage during the day
she is still young so make sure you are giving frequent opportunities to go out

I have loads of dogs Smile from 1 year to 13 years old. They rarely ask to go out. They dont need to . I make sure that they get enough opportunities so never need to be busting to go to the loo.

If I was going out for a bath with a young dog I would give them the opportunity to wee first.

If they are ill or do rarely get caught short they will just stare at me until I let them out but this is really really rare.

Personally I would just increase the opportunity for her to go to the wee in the right place.

Yeah fair play. She is really good, and I do take her out lots but I guess I just need to be a bit more on it.

This morning she was snoozing so nicely and cosily I didn't want to get her up and out in the cold, so just jumped in the bath, but I suppose lesson learnt!

I would go back to training her with the doggy doorbells - but also at that age, if you're going to go off and have a bath or do something that will occupy you for a while, she really needs to be taken out before you go.

She doesn't understand you'll only be half an hour or whatever - she needs to pee and can't get outside so she just goes as close as possible to outside.

The only time my beagle had an accident indoors was when DH disappeared into the shed for ages (I was at work) and shut the dog in the house. He came back to pee all over the floor - never did it again and always lets the dog out to pee before going in the shed 🤣
