Please Help! Seizure but bloods normal?

Today my 8 year old cross breed had a seizure - eyes rolling. legs gave out, stiffness, shaking then when he came round he was sick. It was really awful and quite distressing for us and him.
I called the vet and took him in couple of hours later.
the vet carried out an exam and then 2 blood tests but all were ‘ok’ she said nothing that rings alarm bells. However his weight has dropped a lot (which I was unaware of maybe as I’m with him daily etc ) appetite not changed but maybe drinking slightly less water. She asked to run more bloods (3rd set) and send to a lab which I agreed to.Has anyone had any experience of this? A seizure with nothing really showing on tests? Feel at a loss 500 quid and still none the wiser on how to help him or what is wrong :(

Sorry to hear this, I know how scary it is to witness.

Our dog was diagnosed as a puppy with epilepsy, nothing was ever found on his bloods so this is the diagnosis they give in the absence of any other reason for the seizures.

I hope you get some answers soon Flowers

Thank you so much for your response. Sorry to hear about your dogs illness I hope it is under control now x

It was awful it felt like forever but sure it only lasted a couple of minutes. I’m so scared of it happening again or even worse when I’m out at work and he is on him own.

Its come out of nowhere the only thing they said to further check was the extra bloods in the lab to check heart function? The vet said she was expecting organ issues but nothing showed in the blood?!

Our dog was referred to RVC after his blood tests came back clear. He had a lumbar puncture and CT scan and more blood tests and everything came unremarkable. He still has seizures maybe around once/twice a month but he's the most amazing dog and recovers completely in-between. We obviously don't like it but it's something we've got used to and manage. He's on life time medication but luckily it's covered with insurance. Do you have insurance?

Unremarkable is what the vet described my dogs results as! Sounds awful but it almost would’ve been easier if they did find something!

so pleased to hear you have your dogs issues under control now.
Its so hard to watch isnt it, I felt so helpless.

Yes he is insured but doesn’t sound like it will cover much. Not really sure if I understand the policy documents if I’m honest.
I’ve never had to use it so naively just coasted with it, renewed every year. In hindsight I maybe should’ve upped the policy as he got older?

We felt the same, almost disappointed that nothing was found, we were desperately hoping it was something treatable.

It's a shame about your insurance, give then a call though. Ours were amazing and sorted everything directly with our vets and the hospital.

Typical it happened at the weekend too! All our emergencies have been at the weekend, as if they know!

Very best wishes to you and your doggy, I hope you get some answers soon. I'm very happy to chat with you if you get need a sounding board or distraction. And do let me know how you get on.

Idiopathic epilepsy is the most common cause of seizures in dogs and it is a diagnosis of exclusion - ruling out all other causes. So there are always lots of normal tests.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/10/2022 17:35

How is you dog now @Lilypeony ?

Lilypeony · 03/10/2022 17:44

Hello all

thank you for the comments. Would epilepsy come on all these years later?.. he is 8.

pooch is ok. He has had an upset stomach (a bit mucus like too.. sorry tmi) but no further seizure. Vet mentioned a heart murmur but doesn’t think it’s related.

I’m so worried to leave him atall he is usually fine when we are at work but now I’m so worried about another episode!
