Puppy meeting dogs on walks.. how to handle?

I have a nearly 16 week old pup and we have just started going out for walks. Most of the walks we don’t meet any other dogs but the last 2 days we have ran into a fair few as we are going slightly further away from home.

She has met my parents dog who is 12 years old lab and due to her age isn’t interested in the pup at all. She mostly ignored her and just walks away.
and she’s met our friends dog who she’s happy to be around.

How should I be handling her meeting new dogs though when out on walks? She is always on a lead at the moment but seems scared of any other dogs apart from the two above.

If we are walking past a house that has their dog in the garden and it starts barking she just takes a few steps backwards and sits down and refuses to walk past the house…

Shes come across a dog off lead who paid her no attention and she started to refuse to move again but I just carried on walking and gave her a treat.

However, There was a dog off lead last night who ran up to her, she tried to run away and run behind me and I put myself in front of her and the dog and the owner called the dog back but I could see she was scared as she started shaking.

Im surprised she is so frightened of other dogs considering she loves my parents & friends dog.

Iv read lots of things online about letting dogs go up to her but some of the stuff seems to contradict each other.

She starts puppy classes in a few weeks (couldn’t get in before) and she loves people.

How should I be helping her build confidence around other dogs until we start the classes?

She’s a cavapoo.

I wouldn’t allow her to be saying hello to anything that tears over. I’d just keep her attention on you and keep walking. If YOU see a dog and it is calm and looks well mannered I would ask the owner if they are ok for a quick hello. Loose lead pressure, think a few seconds for them to sniff and keep going.

it is really good for them to learn that they can’t say hello to every dog, and if she doesn’t want to say hello she doesn’t have to

Agree with @SarahSissions completely. Although I have the opposite problem and am trying to teach my puppy to ignore other dogs.

Get her saying hello if the other dogs are friendly. ( I usually go by the owners body language)
Allow her to think all other dogs are to be feared and she'll end up reactive.

Try and speak to owners wherever possible, ask about interaction before allowing it.

My dog loves meeting new dogs and puppies and she adapts her behaviour accordingly. It's a skill your puppy needs to learn and can't be taught by humans.

As above.
Also a puppy training class with other dogs present will give you bothe the tools and confidence to walk past any other dogs.

Try and go to some group puppy classes to build her confidence

keep her focus on you and allow her to meet dogs you know are friendly,
so many people say there dogs are and then they’ll either launch at your poor pup or actually they aren’t that nice at all (of course that’s the two extremes 😂) but because of that I just keep walking past most dogs not making a big deal of it.

i saw interactions for dogs I know and will be nice

Try to figure out who has calm , on the lead dogs and just ask if puppy can meet them. My 8 yo labrador is fantastic with puppies and I'm always happy for him to meet and interact with them as he is calm and shows them how to interact appropriately.
When he was a pup a lady with an older weimeraner (sp) did the same for us.
Also big yes to puppy socializing classes, preferably with an experienced dog behaviourist leading the class.

Thanks everyone. I will be going to puppy classes really soon. I just couldn’t get onto the group before so had to wait until Oct class.

It’s really hard to figure out who’s dogs are friendly or not. I don’t know anyone when I see them on walks 🫣 I only live in a village but there’s lots of people Iv never seen before it seems who have dogs😂

I had a tad more experience today and we only passed another dog who was on a lead. I just kept up a brisk walk and gave her a treat once we passed the dog.

Puppy classes can’t come soon enough. She’s a dream pup really
