Dog won’t eat kibble

Freshstarts22 · 28/09/2022 21:10

Everyone else seems to use kibble but mine just won’t eat it. Much prefers wet food but some days won’t even eat that. She hasn’t eaten a thing today because I’ve only offered kibble.

feed the dog wet food - dont bother about what others would do

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/09/2022 21:14

Mix it with water, I do for my dogs.

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 28/09/2022 21:17

Mine can't eat it dry anymore due to age. I wet it for her, usually with water but with bone broth or gravy as an occasional treat.

Ostryga · 28/09/2022 21:20

Why feed kibble then? Your dog isn’t a robot! Feed them what they like to eat. Imagine if all you got all day was dry biscuits that tasted vaguely like something and then when you didn’t want it you went hungry. Come on.

cushioncovers · 28/09/2022 21:25

Why are you trying to get her to eat kibble? Can't she have wet food with a bit of kibble mixed in?

catchthedog · 28/09/2022 21:28

might hate the taste.. or have sore teeth ..

Ilikewinter · 28/09/2022 21:33

I'm gonna throw a bit of a curve ball here - does your dog like to search for food?.
I ended up putting kibble into a toilet roll tube and fold over the ends so he has to figure out how to open it.....then he oftens eats the rest in his bowl ... of course I could just have a broken dog !!!

Talkingtocamels · 28/09/2022 21:37

Ours won’t eat kibble either. We do 1/2 and 1/2 with meat or gravy or eggs.

CMOTDibbler · 28/09/2022 21:49

One of mine would never touch dry food on its own, and even mixed in with his wet food (which he is very fussy about as well) we can't put it in his breakfast else he wanders off sadly after looking at it. So he has it well mixed in at night, none in the morning and he's done well on that

minsmum · 28/09/2022 21:52

Ours had raw, we bought blocks of nature's instinct, defrost pop in a bowl. He wouldn't eat Kibble

mountainsunsets · 29/09/2022 06:48

Why does she need to eat kibble? Would you want to spend your life eating hard, dry biscuits?

She won’t eat it. Just picks the wet out. I did feed just wet for a while but I’ve tried to reintroduce dry again. I just felt like you’re ‘supposed to’ as that’s what everyone seems to do. Better for their teeth ect

That’ll work if it’s a new kibble, after a day or two, she’s not interested. I’ve always envied the people that can use kibble for treats and puzzle toys.

Going to give my poor pup a bowl of wet food this morning. Whilst on the subject does anyone have any recommendations for a good wet food, if that’s all she’s going to eat? I have used butchers so far but she does get bored.

Ours won’t either so he’s raw fed.

womaninatightspot · 29/09/2022 08:00

My dog will only eat kibble if she’s starving. Weirdly enough she’ll have it as treats for fetching a ball 🤔I just think a bowl of dry biscuits is a bit boring. She’s a bit spoiled though I give her people food a lot so 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast and meat for tea.

mountainsunsets · 29/09/2022 08:08

If you're worried about her teeth, you can add supplements to her food - PlaqueOff is popular but there are plenty of others.

Or just give them natural chews - things like beef trachea or pizzles or pigs ears are great for keeping their teeth clean, just make sure it's in moderation and you alter their meals accordingly so she doesn't put on weight ☺️

Lullabies2Paralyze · 29/09/2022 08:13

I have the opposite, Mine doesn’t like wet as it often has too many veggies that he doesn’t like (carrots) in 😂

mine does sometimes go off his kibble, usually after I’ve just bought a new big bag (typical).

what kibble have you tried? Is it worth trying a grain free one? My rabbit only eats a grain free kibble and won’t eat any other types (I must have bought about 5 or 6 varieties before I found one she would eat, had to donate all the opened uneaten ones to a shelter). You could maybe try and get some smal bags or samples of different brands/flavours and try them to see what he likes.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 29/09/2022 08:17

Mine’s fussy too☹️
I have been feeding Bella and Duke raw food but she’s stopped eating it so I have halted subscription; I have tried James Wellbeloved, Wainwrights, AVA, Nature’s Menu etc. There’s nothing wrong with her teeth, very healthy and active. The only time she’ll eat any kibble (but not finish it) is if I mix with cooked chicken or meat 🙄
So now I am giving her kibble for breakfast, she will eat I presume if she’s hungry, and mixed with something at night.
She’s 19 months old, 20kg and medium sized mongrel, possibly German Shepherd in there somewhere (Romanian rescue) so won’t starve I’m sure!

Keepingthingsinteresting · 29/09/2022 08:22

To be honest I think people feed kibble because it’s easiest- my pup weaned on to it but ate so little that she was really underweight. She’s a fussy type anyway, so I’ve tried a few- butternut box is her favourite, but I alternate with pooch and mut cartons so I have an easier alternative. She like pure for a while ( super easy as rehydrates like a pot noodle!). Lilly’s kitchen gave her violent runs and she wasn’t keen on the nature’s something trays from Tesco. Different dog is supposed to be excellent,

tizwozliz · 29/09/2022 08:37

How old is pup? We went through a really fussy stage (8 months to a year). She'd never eat just kibble but then started refusing even when mixed with wet. I don't know whether it was just time or hitting on the right combination of food but we've not had an issue since, but did end up giving away a few uneaten bags of things.

We tried the hardline approach for a while but she lost weight and I'm too soft so didn't like the thought of her only eating because she's desperate.

PugWhiskers · 29/09/2022 08:40

My dog was fed kibble for the convenience factor on several fronts - it's easy to portion up and transport and scattering it in the garden 1) provided a good sniffing game and 2) meant that when we were house training she was in the right place to go after all the sniffing and eating.

She's recently gone off her plain kibble though, which is unusual as she's food mad. It did coincide with a new bag/batch, so I've been decreasing quantity and mixing it with wet/egg/gravy/fish etc and she's much preferring that.
