Biting lead and barking and snapping on walks

Hi!

Nugget has sometimes done this towards the end of a wall and I assumed overtired. However it's becoming more of a problem and she's caught my hand a couple of times plus she appears so aggressive whilst doing it!

I've tried:
standing still and saying LEAVE. Waiting til she's left it for a while and then good girl and a treat.
Totally standing still and ignoring her.
Swapping for a tug toy.

Literally every walk I do these things but if anything it's worsened and it's the same whether on regular lead or retractable one!

Can anyone relate. She's 4 months old this week and we've been walking for about a month.

Put her on a hasty and please do not use tug toys they can make some dogs aggressive and want to guard possessions.

Halty not hasty

My puppy does this sometimes on a walk, usually when I think she has just had enough and it’s over stimulated. My trainer suggested a chain lead to make it less interesting to chew on. Might be worth a try?

You need to go back to the beginning and introduce the lead properly. Take it off as soon as she bites, walk away and walk over (obviously in the garden not on a walk). Once she can walk nicely in the garden then move onto a walk outside. Lose the tug toy, they encourage over arousal and biting.
How long are you walking her for as this does sound like over stimulation/tiredness.
Retractable leads are horrible so bin that.
Would recommend you go see a gundog trainer too who will teach you how to identify dog's body language and support you with this.

Thanks all. Retractable was a gift and I've only used it to try and see if it made a difference. I agree I don't like them at all. Prefer the fixed lead. Didn't think of a chain one and also have recognised when it's overstimulation or tiredness which initially it was - I literally do 5 mins/month twice a day and no more. She is on 15-20 mins at present. However it can just start mid walk now. I did wonder if it was to get more treats for stopping so do more treat based training in case it's that but it still happens!

I don't tug the toys, she has one rope toy that was part of a pack of toys but I don't do tug of war she just like to throw it about herself and carried it on a walk but not for long!

So yes I definitely want to work out what's the trigger - we are in puppy classes and I'll start by asking there.
Thanks all

Definitely use a metal lead so it's unpleasant for her to bite on.
I also wouldn't take toys on a lead walk at all - it's just too much excitement.

If you attach the lead to the back of a harness and have it "short" she shouldn't be able to bite it either.

I'll get one asap. I only took the tuggy after googling. Usually only balls go with us.

I've tried harnesses too but she still finds a way!

My puppy goes through phases of doing this. It is mostly triggered by over stimulation/tiredness at the end of a walk or excitement at the beginning.

Sometimes she does it when she is frustrated by being on a lead - particularly if she wants to say hello/play with a dog when I want to walk by or it's the end of the walk.

If it's early on in the walk (over excitement) we go home - so no walk (deferred walk I'll try again later) or back to the car depending where we are & start again. Otherwise I ask for a sit and stay & do that a few times to re-focus her.

It is really annoying & she's started doing it yesterday so I'm thinking if returning to the trainee for ideas.

How much on lead walking are you actually doing? Ada could only manage about 5 minutes of nice lead walking at that age.
