Dog constantly licking and sucking back paws and legs

I’ve had a look and there is no obvious injury, she’s chewing, sucking and licking both back paws and legs!?
Also keeps having little instances of trying to coughing/trying to clear her throat. Not regularly, once or twice a day

Any ideas? Dobermann - 3 years old. Due to the breed I’m terrified of heart related illnesses

She needs to see a vet.

vet. Asap

EbbyEbs · 25/09/2022 07:54

she’ll be seeing the vet tomorrow but I need talking down - I’m an anxious mess. Please tell me these symptoms don’t sound heart related 😫

It could be allergies? Good luck at the vet OP

Is this a new thing? My dogs do this as a play thing, it will start with a scratch then often they roll over whilst chewing and licking. Are there ant sores or legions on the paws?

No she’s certainly not playing, it’s a slow focussed ritual she’s doing then she goes to sleep. She’s also started licking the sofa and blankets etc

Allergies? Have you got lots of grass after the crispy brown summer?

Nowheretoogo · 25/09/2022 08:03

My dog started doing that so we took him to the vet, turned out he had fleas!

littlefaith · 25/09/2022 08:13

Our dog started licking the sofa during lockdown. She occasionally licks her front paws. I assume it was a stress response, or self-soothing ritual, maybe arthritis in her paws. She still licks the sofa now and we've started giving her YouMove for her joints too (she's just turned 9). Could it be stress? Have your circumstances changed recently?

littlefaith · 25/09/2022 08:14

As you said, it's a slow focussed ritual before sleep which is why I am assuming that it is self-soothing (in our dog's case) :)

Unfortunately nobody can tell you for certain. You need to see a vet and get her looked at properly.

Coughing could be any number of things - kennel cough, allergies, environment irritation, a stuck grass seed or, yes, it could be a heart condition.

Courtjobby · 25/09/2022 09:31

My dog recently started to do this with his front paw , in his case the get thinks it's self soothing. We need to distract ( not give out) and redirect. Provide luck matts etc. We have also stopped floating his food in water as the vet thinks if it's not self soothing it's him trying to clean his teeth.

Courtjobby · 25/09/2022 09:32

Sorry for my typos - "vet" not "get", "lick" not "luck" matt

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 25/09/2022 09:34

Have you checked her mouth? Ddogs can try and transfer the pain with chewing and licking..

Dobermans are prone to compulsive licking and sucking, of themselves and of various objects. I would definitely ask the vet about what you can do to discourage it.

Fingers crossed that your dog's heart is okay.
