Bloody irresponsible dog owners!!!!!!!

I have a male lab (year old) who was severely attacked a few months ago in an unprovoked attack (on his part). I’ve seen a behavioural therapist who said he suffers PTSD and to take measures to keep him safe (he wears a bright yellow “nervous” collar, I keep a ball as a distraction and I keep him away from other dogs, as he will snap at a dog if they come into his face and act aggressive towards him).

I was just walking him by a river (with a friend who has a dog) and he went into the river with a ball. Suddenly, a fucking husky runs from nowhere and straight up to his face into the river. The owners aren’t there. I can see my dogs ears go back, he’s obviously scared as this dog has gone for him before. I tried to call my dog and this dog growls at my dog, so I jumped into the river to get my dog. Queue the dogs fighting. I’m screaming trying to get this bloody husky away from my dog and then the bloody owners show up; “oh dear, is that my dog? Well he was just tied up outside the house, the 3 year old let him off the hook by mistake”. I am fuming -land saying “my dog is nervous! He was attacked and your dog has gone for him before!”. They don’t care. They start taking to the girl I was with, and she actually turned around and said “ah she’s (me) fine, just a bit wet”.

I am so mad, both at the owners (who didn’t realise the bloody dog had run off!) as they don’t care! Surely if a 3 year old can undo the hook for a huge husky, that is not keeping the animal safe and secure?! I’m angry with my “friend” for thinking I’m overreacting as she knows that my dog was severely bitten a few months ago.

AIBU to think I deserved an actual apology from these owners?! I’m so angry right now and want to go back and tell them what I think of them.

My last dog was as placid as they come but was reactive to some male dogs, basically when he felt threatened. I had no guarantee when that was going to happen so I didn't let him off.

Keep your reactive dog on the lead

DartmoorDoughnut · 24/09/2022 22:14

Their dog was out of control in a public place just report them.

Her dog was also out of control. The husky wasn't fighting itself.

I would like every dog removed from the UK.

Feeling as you do not sure why you got involved in a dog post, just to make a shitty remark I suppose.... turn off the light as you leave......

Oh yah that convo would go real well.....
"oh hey there. I just want to report a dog that was off his lead and attacked my dog..... No my dog wasn't on a lead either but he's non-reactive and has good recall.... Well no he didn't come back when I called him and yes he does react when scared"

DartmoorDoughnut · 24/09/2022 22:22

Well yes but their dog reacted because it was attacked by the halt that has attacked it before. Yes if her dog is nervous/now dog aggressive it should be on lead but an aggressive dog without an owner around should obviously be reported.

DartmoorDoughnut · 24/09/2022 22:22

Halt = husky

DartmoorDoughnut · 24/09/2022 22:24

Jesus fucking christ have any of you actually been involved in or even seen a dog on dog attack? If a dog is being attacked it won’t listen or recall it will defend itself/try to run away.

DartmoorDoughnut · 24/09/2022 22:25

By any of you I mean the two posters who have quoted me not the rest of the vipers

Exactly.

I was walking a family dog who was attacked by two other dogs. I had to drop her lead and let her run off, otherwise she would have been killed.

TiredButAlive · 24/09/2022 22:38

I wish all dog owners would just keep their bloody dogs on leads ( unless in a special area for dogs without leads). I am sick of being jumped on by loose dogs when out walking!!!

Yes thanks I have seen dogs being confronted by other dogs and getting recalled by their owners! I take your point though, not every dog will have that. Maybe those dogs shouldn't be off their leads then just incase....

Badger1970 · 24/09/2022 22:41

My dog is now reactive after being attacked by the same dog 3 times........ it makes me really angry when he's got a visible yelllow NERVOUS harness and lead on but people still let their dogs come up to him. I now carry a very loud whistle to blow on to alert other dog walkers that their dog is coming too close to him and often have to shout as well.

VioletInsolence · 24/09/2022 22:52

Get yourself a dog deterrent spray from the police supplies website. You can get a lanyard from the same place and attach it to your bag.

Whippetlovely · 24/09/2022 22:56

My whippet is very reactive on a lead and I sympathise because it can be stressful having a dog like this.

There are nice dog owners , ones that are new and make mistakes because they are still learning and there are dick dog owners.

I’ve learnt not to get myself worked up in these situations as it doesn’t do me or my dog any good.

Beansandvodka · 24/09/2022 22:58

I think you should be able to let your reactive dog off lead providing that it wears something to alert other owners that it is reactive. If I saw your dog and his yellow collar i would immediately recall my dog. Your dog has as much right to enjoy an off lead walk as any other dog imo. No dog should be out of its owners sight and getting loose like that is a recipe’s for disaster.. it could get hit by a car not into a field of sheep. Yanbu.

Beansandvodka · 24/09/2022 23:00

Mangogogogo · 24/09/2022 18:34

Your dog is aggressive put him on a fucking lead. You are so irresponsible

The OP’s dog isn’t aggressive, it’s reactive. Big difference

HarryBlaster · 24/09/2022 23:01

A Husky should not be a pet. This really irritates me. They need a minimum of 4 hours exercise a day but now it’s fashionable to have one as a family pet. All that pent up energy that they don’t get to exert will come out one way or another. Frightening, especially with young children about. Disgustingly irresponsible behaviour.

Beansandvodka · 24/09/2022 23:02

FruitPastilleNut · 24/09/2022 20:33

Don't let aggressive dogs off the lead. What if the husky was a fox or swan? They'd have no owner to keep them secure and your dog would still be aggressive

This deserves repeating over and over. There is no excuse to have a reactive, aggression-prone dog off a lead.

Never seen a fox or swan attack a dog in my life.

They make great pets for people who lead a very active lifestyle.

I would like every dog removed from the UK.

Wow. You dont like something, so it shouldnt exist?

I would rather every person who says purile things like that was "removed from the UK".

That's not going to happen either though.

Humans have developed over millenia with dogs.

What you would like is irrelevant.

ILoveMonday · 24/09/2022 23:10

I know it's going against mn consensus here but I can understand your perspective. Having your dog attacked is traumatic for both of you. My dog was attacked a while ago and it took 6 months to train him out of his habits - basically my behaviourist reminded me that the dog walk should be all about the dog, so when they're off the lead you should be making eye contact with them regularly and engaging with them so they get reassurance from your presence. There's also the element of your anxiety to deal with. I know my anxiety made it worse for my dog - he sensed it and became more defensive. Maybe it would be worth talking to someone about it.

So take your dog somewhere else! I don't understand why you'd be taking your nervous dog out around other off-lead dogs?

Confusion101 · 24/09/2022 23:14

Agree with this to be fair. Not nice no matter the circumstances!

I'm not used to people being so open to having dogs off leads in public places that aren't specifically for that purpose. Where I'm from parks and public walking tracks generally have signs to keep dogs on a lead at all times and on those that don't you would get dirty looks / it would be frowned upon!

deviatedseptum · 24/09/2022 23:14

Your poor dog. You have done everything you can to protect him including giving time, effort and money. I can't believe how mean people are being.
