Eating poo...

15 week old cocker spaniel who I'm struggling to toilet train. She knows to go outside but every now and again likes to surprise me by pooing indoors and then eating it before I get to it.

Obviously this isn't great, but she keeps pooing in the night despite last feed at 6pm. She then eats it. I'm not sure what to do. Any advice please?

Ah I’m sorry. I have a poo eater. She’s nearly a year now and hasn’t grown out of it. She doesn’t poo in the house though but it means we can never just let her out for a poo. We have to escort her so we can pick it up. She knows not too eat poo in front of us now but if we take our eye off her she’s on it. Then she gets diarrhoea. Lovely.

Anyway… is she crate trained? She might not poo in the crate overnight, or wake you to say she needs out to go, and then you can get rid of the crate when she’s old enough to hold it all night. At that age they go quite often but when older it’s only a 2/3 times a day so not overnight.

Thanks for your advice. She is crate trained, just not with the door closed as she gets very anxious and I worry that she'll have negative vibes and won't go in there at all. Apart from that, she loves going in there and sleeping.

I'm not sure what to do - just go for it in the crate and hope for the best, or just give it longer.....

I'm sorry to say that my cocker spaniel pooed in his crate until he was 20 weeks old 🙈. I took him for a walk every night before he went his crate (in the hope that he would go then instead!) and he eventually just stopped.

Overall, it took about 6 or 7 months for him to be 100% house trained (carpets confused him) but he got there eventually.

As far as I know, he never ate his own poo, but 4 years later. the filthy minger still eats other dog's poo 🤢.

Do you take her on a short toilet walk before bed? Does she wake you at night if she needs to go?

She may be a bit young but you can give a bit of pineapple, apparently it doesn't taste as good second time around and helps to prevent them eating the poo.

I think you need to get up halfway through the night and walk her on lead around the garden into she goes outside. She is still very young.

15 weeks is still really young, she probably just needs to be taken out in the night still.

I have a poo eater, he's nearly 8 months now and we have to watch him like a hawk, he's gross, he'll even eat it directly from our other dog whilst he's pooing if I don't keep them separated. He's disgusting.
