Had my dog PTS last week and still so very sad

She was only 9 but had a lot of issues, 3 cruciate ops (1 failed), 2 bad elbows, 2 bad hips, extremely arthritic, few lumps but still so very happy. We managed her pain on daily painkillers and antiflammatories, plus a monthly pain injection from the vet and up until Wednesday she was playful, bouncy, keen to go on walks etc. She went downhill very quickly on Wednesday morning, couldn't get up, couldn't walk, was very quite and looked awfully sad. I did what I had to do but lying there on the floor with her whilst they injected her was the hardest thing I've had to do.

Here she is, this was only a few days before she died. Miss her terribly 😓

Oh you poor thing. I replied to a post this morning about an elderly cat, and it made me think about both my old cat who I'd had to have PTS, and then I went and gave an extra big cuddle to my dog, who is nearly 10 and pondered about the next years of her life and how sad it would be and felt quite maudlin.

You poor, poor thing. It's very new and sudden and it's going to take time for you to get your head around.

I absolutely love that photo. How wonderful for her to have such an amazing quality of life right up to the last few days. You made what sounds like a horrendous decision, but it sounds like the right decision. Much better for her than a gradual decline, but so tough on you.

A huge un mumsnetty hug. And I hope you can raise a glass to her later and take comfort in the fact she lived her best life right up to the end.

What a lovely girl

Gosh I could of written this...

I'm currently sat outside my daughters school and I'm supposed to be assembly but got hit with a wave of emotion, hense I'm sitting in my car :-(

It is very very hard.. do you keep forgetting for a micro second? I do and its awful. Lots of people have told me that time is a great healer....

Everything just feels so muted and sad.

I feel for you so much, I hope it gets better for you 😘

I think because she was relatively young and up until last Wednesday, still very 'normal' that I'd have more time with her. All the firsts since have been hard like coming home from work for the first time, accidentally cooking too much veg for Sunday dinner so I could give her some for her breakfast the next day, coming into the room when I've been gone, whether it be for 2 minutes or 2 hours, she'd greet you with a favourite toy in her mouth. Her tail would be wagging so hard her whole body would be swaying from side to side as she wiggled about following me.

Yeah, I do keep forgetting but then the vets sent a print of her paw and that tipped me over the edge, or I'll see a pic on my phone, or one of her toys that I missed when I packed her things away.

What a beautiful, expressive face! So sorry to hear this. It’s definitely very tough but it does get easier with time.

BigFatLiar · 23/09/2022 15:23

Losing a pet is losing a member of the family. It takes time to grieve and like any other loss never truly leaves you.

Ekerty72 · 23/09/2022 15:24

I love your memories of her waggy tail!!!! That's what I love about dogs, always so pleased to see you!

Spanielsarepainless · 23/09/2022 16:02

Like your dear dog my old Labrador was fine the night before. He even managed a short walk in the spring evening sunshine. But the following morning he couldn't stand and that was it. He was fifteen and a half. This was last year, and although I have a puppy, thinking of my darling dog still brings tears to my eyes, and even the previous darling boy who was PTS seventeen years ago. They are so special and give us so much.

redtshirt50 · 24/09/2022 14:07

My dog was pts yesterday morning.

she was 12 but the decline was also very sudden :(

it feels so strange to go on a walk without her, and even stranger not having her greet me when I come in

I an keeping her favourite toy in my bed with me so I can feel close to her

TotallSilent · 24/09/2022 17:35

She's so beautiful, clearly a wonderful little soul.

I'm so sorry for your loss, there are absolutely no words to say but I lost my boy recently so know how you feel.

There's no hurt like it. You did the right thing for her and as someone once said to me, you're having to live without her now but at least she never had to live without you, she knew the comfort of your love right until her last moment.

Thinking of you, OP.

Missingmygirl · 26/09/2022 10:07

Thank you all and my thoughts are with those of you who have lots pets too, it's so hard. I've just had the call from the vets to say her ashes are ready for collection (sad) but I'm going to take them to one of her favourite places at the weekend, it's a lake where she used to love a swim Smile

She was beautiful, you did what you did out of love for her. It's hell, been through it so many times. A good friend of over 35 years, also had her lab PTS at 8, because of severe arthritis
She bought him in a petshop, which had been in the papers on TV,puppy farms etc, she didn't get a hipscore. It was their first and only dog, they said they would never go through this again. I've got a 16.5 years old Phalane, rotten teeth, but obviously vet won't operate,no arthritis, still up for several hours walking, he's got cataracts, so keep him on the lead, because he goes off. The last few weeks he's been barking really loudly (at nothing) 2 or 3 in the night/morning, waking me up,I feel absolutely dreadful and can't get back to sleep. We have a 7 year old Border collie who sleeps with one eye open,so if there was anything to bark at..... she would be first in the queue.
