Six month old pup still peeing inside

Hi I'm after some advice.

I have a 6mo female golden retriever who just doesn't seem to get toilet training.

She goes overnight for 8 hours (she might be able to go longer but I go down after this time) so I know she can hold it, though appreciate she drinks more in the day.

Every time I think we are cracking it she will pee inside. Today she peed in the kitchen and she hadn't that long been out for a wee. I take her out regularly on the lead and she will wee over the road- it's doesn't work if I take her to pee in the garden! Today is the first time in about five days.

I've cleaned with enzyme stuff to the point the smell of it is making me feel quite nauseous and my house stinks of it.

She's been too big to pick up and pop outside if I catch her peeing but actually she does it when we aren't looking anyway.

It's a shame as I'd like to have her upstairs with me in my office in the day but I won't do that until she is no longer going inside. So this means I'm working in my dining room where there's cleanable floor and not carpet... yet still I'm failing.

I'm so fed up with this now. I can't relax. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I feel your pain and was you 2 years ago, I was at my wits end.

Simple Solution was the best thing and didn't really smell. I used it religiously and did heaps of praise when outside, I had to have a week of behaving like he was a baby again, going out every half hour, I think he just grew out of it. Hope that happens soon for you, it's so frustrating.

How often are you taking her outside and are you praising her/giving her a mega high value reward when she goes?

satur · 21/09/2022 20:30

I take her out every couple of hours.

I might need to revisit the treat offered. What would you recommend?

Lots of trips out and keep on lead in the house so she can’t secretly go

Something very high value that she only gets if she goes outside so it's a really big reward for her. We used tiny bits of cheese but you can use things like chopped up cocktail sausages, sprats or hotdog sausages too ☺️

Go back to basics and take her out every 30-60 minutes. Try and anticipate her needing to go.
Has she been checked for an infection ? Has she had her first season yet, as that can mess with their bladder ? Are you getting her spayed ?

Tbh she is still young, if she is going 5 days without an accident she may just have been caught short. My 8 month old pup has been reliably toilet trained for a couple of months, yet yesterday he peed in the kitchen (I was on a teams meeting! He made eye contact the whole time and looked horrified and there was nothing I could do 😂). This as the first time in months so I'm putting it down to babyness. I think they are like kids really. Sometimes it fails a bit!
Just keep taking her out regularly, praise her for doing it outside and it'll come. If really worried see a vet.

Good value like chicken or cheese and really stupid over the top praise every single time pup goes to wee outside, that’s what our puppy trainer said to do when we were in similar situation, my puppy soon learnt that he got a good treat and that I was pleased with him going outside. Keep this up for at least 2 weeks and see if it improves, it worked for us.

OrlandointheWilderness · 22/09/2022 07:18

There is an increased cancer risk for pups spayed at a year, best to wait until 2 ish. I'd not want to spay too young personally.

I'm wfh today with her so will try to take out more frequently. I always take her out after sleep.

She's not had a season and no infection that I know of but maybe a trip to the vet to rule it out would be sensible.

Thanks

I do plan to spay her but not until she's much much older.

This is because I don't want her having pups from some random dog... my sister's in tact 18mo recently impregnated a bitch who was off lead whilst in heat (owner claimed they hadn't realised) and it's scared me!

My DM has a bitch and I have a dog, they're brother and sister.
My dog grasped it early but his sister was over 1yo when she did.
Same with DMIL bitch.
I just put it down to bitches being slower to get it , I might be wrong ?
She will get it eventually though

Ivedonethisthreetimesalready · 22/09/2022 08:34

If you ar going to treat when you dog does a wee do make sure that the dog has completely finished the wee before giving it to them.

Some dogs learn really quickly that a treat is coming, do half the wee, get the treat, go back inside and finish off the wee a bit later usually indoors

I’ve had pups that have had no accidents at all and then others that have been a nightmare. My last pup was still having occasional accidents inside at 6 months despite all my efforts. Don’t beat yourself up about it, they all get there eventually. Just when I was thinking that I would never get it sorted, she just stopped. 😂 Interestingly she was the only puppy I’ve ever had that came from an outside kennel and I think that early potty training, by the breeder is a tremendous help. Keep going, you’re nearly there!
