Taking on a dog from someone who can no longer look after her.

Purposely a bit vague. We have had to take in a relative’s dog. We don’t mind, she is a sweetie, but I found out that despite having her from a pup, she isn’t chipped. Relative isn’t able to give any kind of written or verbal permission for us to chip her and we have no written details of his ownership of her. What are the logistics of getting her chipped in our name?

Can you go to relatives vet and explain the position ? Assuming relative had a vet, which may not be the case if dog not chipped.

If the dog has never been chipped, I don't see why you can't just go and get it chipped and put your own details on there?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 19/09/2022 15:35

Well she was spayed, so don’t know why they didn’t check. But will ring them (add it to the list of shit to deal with)

If you’re taking on ownership do you have any proof of that? Legally this dog should have been chipped. This alll sounds really dodgy.

FredrikaPeri · 19/09/2022 15:43

Just get the dog chipped.

KangarooKenny · 19/09/2022 15:44

Just go to the vet and register it as your dog, then get it chipped.

tabulahrasa · 19/09/2022 15:54

Just register her at a vet and get it done there. I can’t see it being a huge issue tbh, because obviously if they ask you’ll be able to say where she’s from etc.

ThunderstomsAreComing · 19/09/2022 18:19

she might have been chipped by the breeder and your relative just wasn't aware. Most vets scan and take chip details when you register them. Ask the original vet if there are chip details on their records.

If there are then Transferring ownership on the chip is easy, once you have the number you contact them and explain the situation. They will put your details on temporarily and write to the original owner saying they have had a transfer request. If they don't get an answer from the registered address within a few months (it might have been three) then they remove the old owners details.

I took on a relative's dog after they died so went through this process. Her son was clearing the house and didn't have the headspace to write back with death certificates etc so I told him just to ignore the letter and the process would happen, and it did.

My husband took him to get the pup from the breeder 5 years ago. We have watched her grow up.There is nothing dodgy going on at all. He can no longer care for him and is not able to give written or verbal consent. But always said when he was unable to care for her that we should.

You can just take the dog to get chipped.

ScattyHattie · 20/09/2022 00:30

It was only fairly recently that breeders became responsible for microchipping pups before it was owner's responsibility and vets didn't have any obligation to check them so imagine quite a few forgot about it or were never registered to a new owner. I would just get vet nurse or a microchip implanter to scan all over (as can move) to check definitely hasn't been done already & before implanting.

Chipping doesn't require vet in case also needing wait 14day for insurance cover to kick in before scheduling vet health check up.
