My dog 'ate' a bit of a dead rabbit

Hi all,

On our field walk this morning, my dog was sniffing for ages in the bushes - not unusual.

When I eventually went to chivvy him along, I found that he had actually been 'nibbling' at a dead rabbit.

The rabbit looked like it was recently dead and had died from an attack.

My dog probably didn't eat much of it, more sniffed and licked it.

Do I need to be mindful of anything?

I will contact the vet if needed.

Mine once nibbled on a long dead, partially desiccated, hedgehog with no ill effects. I would just watch and wait, if they show any signs of illness then contact a vet and ask their advice.

Only if he starts vomiting. My dogs eat all sorts of unsavoury things (I caught them eating the cats poo the other day 🤢)

Apparently cat shit is like pate to dogs, maybe next time throw a slice of bread in the toaster so they can eat it properly.

That sounds reassuring, thank you.

He seems fine. Certainly not off his food!

Mine catches and eats them whenever he can, he’s never had any problems!

Mine ate a whole one yesterday, it happens fairly regularly. No issues so far.

your dog is “designed” to live off rabbits. We use a raw then dried kibble from Germany and it is based on the high protein and low carb values of a rabbit so you only need to worry if the rabbit was poisoned but that goes for lots of things in the wild.

Ahhhh we love a crunchy dead thing in this household. Also a runny dead thing. I wouldn't worry.

Mine has caught and eaten a rabbit before now.

As long as he's upto date on his worming treatment, I really wouldn't worry Grin
