Separation anxiety risk in mini poodles?

Hi all,
we’re ready to get our next dog after losing our beagle to old age and after reading tons of threads on here and elsewhere, I think a miniature poodle sounds like a great fit with our family.

However, I’m aware that the breed has a tendency to separation anxiety and I’m interested if anyone can tell me how likely it is and what are the best steps to help avoid it?

We’ve found an excellent breeder who breeds for health and temperament so I’m confident that is a good starting point - but we’re a busy family so although the dog will never be left for a long stretch, after the initial puppy stage, there will be plenty of popping in and out and people arriving and going etc.

thank you!

We have a mini poodle -she's nearly 2 now. We have no problems with separation anxiety.

What I did from day one was leave her in her crate when I did the school run morning and afternoons. So she had about two hours a day on her own. We dropped the crate from about 6 months and she has the kitchen/sitting room to pootle in when we are out. Also I am home most of the time - so I was concerned she could get sep anxiety so I made sure she had this experience from the start. She is fine now when we leave.

Thanks Havfrue, that’s really helpful and reassuring!
I definitely see the sense in starting as we mean to go on and as much as possible fitting new puppy into the life routine we’ll have as it’s older.

Our miniature poodle suffered terrible separation anxiety. Sorry. He couldn't be left alone at all or he would howl for HOURS. He had to move in with my grandparents because they were always home.

I think it’s an individual thing rather than a breed thing.

That’s exactly what I’m concerned about Xela.

Ive read quite a lot about the breed now and lots of guides say that because they’re bred as companion dogs - separation anxiety can be common, in the minis but not standards.

it’s the only thing giving me pause because otherwise the breed sounds perfect for us and I know they’re well regarded on here too

My 2 year old mini poodle had absolutely awful separation anxiety I'm sorry to say- he would cry if I closed the door to go to the toilet, and howl himself sick if we left the house for more than 5 minutes. We just couldn't seem to crack it.

So. We got a second one 😁and the arrial of her helped him so much, we built up to 4 hours and never had a peep since (we have doggy cameras so know this is true!)

ARRIVAL* of her!

Thanks Beetr00t!

Im hoping that starting from puppyhood may give us a better chance of avoiding but I do see that perhaps a solution if it’s bad would be a second dog. We live next door to my dad and he has a lovely lab so perhaps I could utilise him too…
