Dog been sick now better - does he still need a vet?

My dog was sick several times yesterday evening and in the night.

I 'suspect' it might be due to the beef tails I bought for him yesterday which he's never had before and might have been a bit rich.

He was very lethargic this morning so I phoned the vet and got an appointment for this afternoon.

He ate a little breakfast at around 9am and hasn't been sick since, he's had some water to drink.

Been weeing fine, hasn't had a poo, doesn't seem to be in pain but definitely quiet and feeling sorry for himself.

Should I keep the appointment? We've been at the vets a lot with him recently for various bits and pieces and I don't want to pay a fortune and spend hours for them to say - 'keep an eye on him'

I personally wouldn’t take him unless he was still unwell, maybe give them a call and explain? My dog can’t tolerate beef either.

Not sure if you have already been on the appointment - but I would go. If he hasn't had a poo and is lethargic he could have a blockage....well that's what I would worry about. I would go just so I wouldn't have to worry! Hopefully he will be fine :)

I wouldn't take mine. I withhold food for 12 hrs and then slowly reintroduce only if there were ongoing problems would I take them. especially as you can pinpoint what is likely to have caused it.

Gastheif · 13/09/2022 12:16

I wouldn’t take him either. My dog is sick sometimes and I’d only take her if it was persisting for more than 48 hours

JudgeRindersMinder · 13/09/2022 12:19

I’d give it another 24 hours or so till you go to the vet and either starve him or give him plain boiled rice to eat for the next 12-24 hours

Depends what 'the other bits' were & your dog. I look after my friends dog a LOT. He throws up quite a bit, but he's a chocolate lab who constantly chews & eats all manner of stuff in the garden, he is usually only sick once though.

my (late 😭) spaniel I would probably just keep a close eye on her & if she was eating/toileting as normal not take her to the vets today, but if she was sick again today then take her tomorrow.

other dogs could have gone either way depending on them & what they are/were normally like.

& obviously why else you've been back & forth to the vets

but 'beef tails' or other 'rich treats' I'd give sparingly, especially the first time.

hope he's ok
xx

If he is lethargic I would go. My previous dog had Canine Seasonal Illness (this time of year) and I got him to the vet in time. An acquaintance wasn't as lucky. But you know your dog best.

Thank you

He's a spaniel and does eat random shit on occasion but I keep a close eye on him and I don't think he's eaten anything he shouldn't.

There were no bits in his vomit other than his normal food, and a 'bit' of the beef tail, which I don't think he'd chewed properly.

I'm going to give him another hour, and then give them a ring and see what they say.

I rang the vet. They said to monitor him and bring him in tomorrow if not better.

He's just come in and wolfed the rest of his breakfast. No vomiting since overnight so 🤞

I am glad to hear he must be feeling better - they are such a worry!

mountainsunsets · 13/09/2022 19:29

I'm glad he's feeling better!

I personally don't take them to the vet for vomiting unless it goes on for longer than 24h and/or they can't keep water down. Most episodes resolve themselves in a day or so in my experience as long as you rest them and give bland foods.

fruitstick · 13/09/2022 20:51

He's eaten this evening and no more vomiting. He's definitely perkier so hopefully tomorrow will be back to normal more or less 🤞

Bloody dog.

Can I give you all a bit of advice.

we’ve recently tried to claim on our pet insurance for pancreatitis in our elderly dog.

As id advised the vet that she occasionally get sick after eating different food or treats the insurance refused to pay out as it was on her notes and evidence of previous ‘digestive issues’.

so beware of what goes on your dogs notes for future insurance claims.

That's good info, thank you.
