Golden owners: second pup

Stumpedasatree · 12/09/2022 14:25

We have a wonderful super calm 6yo golden retriever. The small humans in the family are hankering after a puppy sister for her. She is a show golden and we are considering a working golden pup. Please tell me any pros, cons, considerations that I need to know.

I only have one and lovely as he is it’s enough for me.
However, I do know people with a Goldie pack and I am a bit jealous. They all seem to rub along pretty well with the older ones sorting them younger ones out when necessary. My friend has just got no 3. She got a Bitch then 2 years later a Dog and 3 years later another Dog. The Bitch is very tolerant of the older dog but refuses to acknowledge the pup yet but it’s early days.
Apart from the increased costs you need a bigger car and it’s harder to find dog sitters from what I gather. Other than that and the floof it’s great

As long as your existing dog gets on with puppies and is happy to have other dogs in the house, I can't see any issues! Six is a great age to introduce a youngster ☺️

I would say, though, that you'll need to walk them separately for a while so make sure you have time. Also think about added costs - food, insurance, dog walker, kennels etc.

Be very, very careful. 2 can quickly become a pack because 1 more won't make any difference.
I secretly think that 5 is the perfect number of goldens, though I know that others think I'm mad.

I'd be very careful about a working one. Not all show goldens are calm. I've got two dual purpose and one is very even and the other is wilder. I was offered a working one and said no, and I'm quite a seasoned GR owner (on my third and owned them 15 years).

I do, however, think it's wonderful to have two. I went down to one in January and lasted until May before I had a second again.

Working can be quite high energy and drive and will be hitting their peak when your girl is starting to slow down. As long as you are prepared to do things separately with them on an ongoing basis then you’ll be fine.
