Fleas- despite using monthly advocate

I assume its due to no rain for mths, then rain last week and increased humidity? I was putting on the monthly advocate flea/tick treatment and noticed about 8 fleas on our 1yr old mini poodle. I've never seen fleas on her before. Should I also use a flea shampoo or will the advocate kill them eventually? I plan to wash all her bedding, but does it need to be at a certain temperature to kill the eggs?

You will need to treat the whole house. Eggs can lay dormant in the carpet, rugs, furnishings and then hatch out. It will be a never ending cycle if you are only treating the dog.
Get a more effective flea treatment from the vet and do the whole house.

@Oopsilot Thanks. The advocate is already prescribed by the vet! Is there something stronger I should be asking for?

Just found three on our Schnoodle 🙄.

Advocate is crap. We had loads of fleas when we were using a spot on treatment.

Ours now have a tablet but I can't remember the name.

You need to treat the house. Get a couple of cans of indorex, clean everywhere and wash everything.

We are having a nightmare with them this last month we have done spot on, flea shampoo and the a £20 tablet for the vet and she still has them!! We have also flea bombed the house, washed all the bedding etc etc I don't know what else to do to get rid of them I think it must be a particular bad year for them!

LadyCluck · 11/09/2022 21:33

Shampoo
Advocate
Wash everything
Indorex

Yeahrepublic · 11/09/2022 21:33

The tablet is Symparica I think.

We found fleas on our dog at the start of the summer holidays, it was a bloody nightmare and took 6 weeks to clear the house of them. The kids leave the dog gate open at the top of the stairs so he'd been in 2 bedrooms, and we found fleas there, and in the living room. Washed everything like dog beds, rugs, bedding etc numerous times. Hoovered every inch of the carpets every day, went through 4 cans of indorex spray and a bottle of flea shampoo. He's finally flea free thank god.
Vet said it had been a summer for them, many clients coming in for treatment.

It might be that the fleas in your area are not affected by certain types of flea treatment (a vet once told me this appears to happen sometimes, never tried to fact check it!) So just ask for another type. But also you do need to treat your house thoroughly. It is an absolute pain, even if your house is tidy. You need to get under everything. I've had fleas on pets in years gone by and it is a nightmare.

A good test of whether they are "gone" is to put a bowl of hot water on the floor and wait. They are attracted to heat and will jump in.

They are also like tiny cockroaches and really hard to kill, but you probably know that.

Good luck!

We didn’t find the spot on treatments worked reliably, I get a tablet now which does - our brand is called NexGard.

hedgehoglurker · 14/09/2022 12:54

We use Simparica Trio tablets monthly. They cover fleas, ticks, heartworm, roundworm and hookworm. (Plus a Droncit wormer every three months for tapeworm.)

Frlrlrubert · 14/09/2022 13:01

Ours have Nexguard Spectra tablets. The spot on stopped working and we had to do the whole house with Indorex. Twice. If was awful.

If you catch it now and wash everything (I'd wash at 60) and hoover like a mad thing you might avoid an infestation, to be honest after last time I'd probably indorex now to be on the safe side, especially carpets and any soft furnishings.

MarmiteCoriander · 14/09/2022 18:47

Thanks everyone. Thankfully, I have not seen a flea since the 8 I removed from her and put the advocate on. I realise there could be eggs all around the place and am doing what I can about soft furnishing etc etc.
