Taking puppy out before fully vax’d

Newbie owner, be kind!

getting our 10weeks old puppy on Monday, first set of vax done on Friday - I know now to let him go on the ground anywhere there have been other dogs until he’s 2 weeks past first set of vaccinations, can I take him to places like my parents’ house and their garden which never sees another dog, or is it a hard fast no paws on the ground outside your home and garden rule?

You can put him down anywhere there’s definitely been no unvaccinated dogs or I’d likely to be fox etc free. That includes dogs that are fully vaccinated btw, if you know any.

and carry everywhere else.

He will be ok at your parents house.
I used to take my dog to see my mum’s dog. They were going to see each other a lot so needed to get used to each other. And it was no different to my pup living with an older dog.

Hmmmm the fox thing can’t be guaranteed - they have a reasonable garden and they live in the countryside….

I live in the countryside too, and had no choice but to take my dog into my garden.

Well me too to be honest!!

You might want to check with your vet about parvovirus rates locally then, because if they’re pretty high and you definitely do have foxes... you might want to sort something temporary for the garden.

If they’re not particularly high and it’s just can’t guarantee there hasn’t been a fox at some point, then it’s not a major worry.

I got a puppy sling and carried mine everywhere, feeding him treats if we heard loud noises or saw new things so he associated them with nice food. It’s really important to do lots of socialisation before 16 weeks. Carry pup or use a sling and go to the supermarket, school, bus station etc. I took mine to lots of places and he’s now ten months and bombproof, nothing phases him.

If you're concerned, you could always bring a blanket and put the puppy down on that? So they are down but paws aren't touching the ground. We took ours to a friend's house where we knew the dog was vaccinated. Per the other poster, we didn't feel it was any different to having another dog in the house.

Thanks all - re foxes we haven’t seen any but that’s a great idea to ask my mum and her vet

re sling he’s already 8kg but I do want to take him out and about, is there another way that doesn’t involve carrying such a lump?!

You can take him somewhere interesting in the car and sit with him in the boot so he can see what's going on.

One of my puppies managed to roll in fox shit before being fully vaxxed and she survived. But yes, foxes can carry parvo so it's worth being careful, but not paranoid. You do want to habituate a puppy to the world in that crucial window. I've always taken a few risks to do so, but appreciate that not everyone agrees.

Ylvamoon · 09/09/2022 16:41

Yes, you can and should take your puppy out.
Things to avoid are stagnant water, unvaccinated dogs and foxes + their mess.
Your mum's house is fine as long as there isn't a pond within reach.
Other good places for socialising is a bussy shopping area with plenty of people or a busy park with carpark - just be wary of noisy children & other dogs.
If puppy starts feeling uncomfortable in any situation, just take him away.

Foxes are everywhere, why risk it?

SarahSissions · 09/09/2022 17:51

I’d speak with your vet, they’ll be able to let you know about the risk locally
