Dog has sudden allergies

On Thursday night (Friday morning actually 3 am) dog woke
Me up and he horrendous allergic reaction. Whole face swollen, eyes were slits and red raw, hive all over. It was very alarming.

Gave him a Loratadine as was all I had and Google said it was dog safe (this was 3am) he was obviously irritated and would not settle but not quiet or unwell.

He settled after A while on his bed and I stayed with him. The next day his face went down slowly and by tea time he was ok ( he's not easy to take to the vet). By Saturday morning his face was normal and no sign of hives.

Saturday night he became really unsettled again could not sit, very agitated and unlike him self. Realised the hives had come back. This morning still the same. Got some piriton from chemists and gave him this and this helped him settle. He still has hives all over and is fine in himself but is very agitated by the hives.

I first though it could be a crust of tiger bread I gave him Thursday. This has sesame oil in it and a know allergen in humans causing anaphylaxis. But surely this would have gone by now. Can anyone shed any light on this.

We will take him to vets now but he's tricky so we always treat at home where possible. Any ideas?

Take photos and send to your vet, he really needs to be looked at asap.

Anything in the garden maybe? Did you do any walks on those particular days? Think about any things that have change over the last week

Trulyweird1 · 09/09/2022 16:26

Reaction to insect bite? Change in bedding or home environment - have you washed anything, sprayed anything?

its interesting it seems to be at night, so is he doing something inside or outside that is putting him in contact with an irritant ? Walk through long grass? Tree pollen area?

It could be absolutely anything - but maybe think about the following:

Have you recently washed his bedding - maybe the detergent has changed?
Has his food changed at all - sometimes they don't always advertise recipe changes.
Where does he sleep? Are there any environmental changes - new furniture, have the windows been open etc.
Insect bites? Have you checked him thoroughly for fleas? Some dogs have allergic reactions to flea bites, for example.

Ultimately he does need to see a vet though - hopefully you get some answers!

Thanks for the replies. It was really odd as no other changes (detergent same walk the same no fleas) and he had been off his food as he hurt his tail (again he has happy tail syndrome which makes him very sad) which is why I gave him a crust of bread.

I do think it is a sesame reaction. He had piriton Sunday and Monday and was totally fine.

He was fine in himself all day and went to day care (at my mums!) and all symptoms gone so called the vet and cancelled his appointment.
