Friend rehoming border collie

I've been involved in animal rescue before and also know a lot of 'doggy' people so friend asked me to help. Unfortunately I have got nowhere. Some friends have been interested but changed their minds for various reasons. Rescues are either full or won't take the dog due to dog being food aggressive. I am just not sure what else I could do.

Rehoming as it is friends parent's, they're quite elderly and dog needs much exercise and attention. Food aggression is quite a new thing for the dog.

I'm of course going to keep trying, and dog is safe for now albeit likely unhappy. What else may I have missed? Does anyone know of any tips? Lancashire area (not where I live)!

Thanks. I just thought worth asking.

Oh gosh elderly people getting a border collie, that was always a bad idea. While you are trying to find someone, could they use a dog walker or pay for doggy day care where the dog will get enough exercise in the day?

Have you tried Valgrays? Specific to collies.

I know :( madness but apparently they've had collies all their lives and this one is just too much for them
I don't know them, but I'm guessing perhaps they're ageing now and didn't realise it was just to much. And/or this one may be more spirited, perhaps they've just got lucky. I will suggest that to my friend, thanks. It may help the dog's behavioural issue with food, too.

NC fail on above post, ah well. I'm not sure to be honest as I had a list of them, but perhaps not. Will check, thanks :)

Border Collie Spot is based in Berkshire but is a collie specific rescue, they may be able to give you advice. Am sure there are other collie rescues nearer.

mountainsunsets · 04/09/2022 18:48

Unfortunately I think most rescues are really struggling at the moment.

If the dog is okay (aside from the food aggression), I would recommend a dog walker or daycare if they can afford it.

Strangeways19 · 04/09/2022 18:53

How older is the dog?
Could you suggest some training & a dog walker, seems a shame that they're giving up on their dog so quickly. Although if they're set you could try some local smaller rescues as well as the bigger ones, I think though that's if they sorted the resource guarding they'd have a better chance of rehoming. This doesn't have to be a long process it just means that they'll have to read about it or consult a local training group

You will need to widen your search from a local area

preloved border collies
Valgrays
Border Collie Spot
wiccaweys ignore bad press from a few years ago
freedom of spirit
Bordercollie rescue
Border collie rescue and rehab
Border collie Trust

Where did they get the dog from? If breeders they should approach them and of course the original rescue should be involved.

HillyJilly · 04/09/2022 19:33

Thank you-going to make sure I've tried all those rescues. It was from a breeder, so that's a good point, I will ask that they contact them. Dog is 6.

Apparently they're her second home. She was originally from a farm(all they know is somewhere in Yorkshire) and was rehomed as a young couple who originally bought her couldn't cope with her and she was adopted by my friends parents. Poor thing :(
