Hi everyone
I need some advice!
I have a 16 year old Yorkshire terrier, he has lost sight in both eyes, lost hearing in both ears, he has a growth in one ear causing no pain but he potentially needs his ear canal removing. First he needs a scan for this.

He lays in his bed all day unless we are eating he will come say hello. He eats breakfast and dinner no problem.

The main issue I am having is he has slowly in the last few months lost control of his bladder. He is peeing in the house at night mainly downstairs but now suddenly started doing it in our bedroom and on the landing It’s as if he doesn’t even know he is doing it. He walks around at night staring and sometimes tries to go through the bins!! Luckily our back door is open because of the weather but if it’s shut he won’t even signal to go toilet and does it in the house during the day.

I don’t know what to do.

It doesn't sound like there's much quality of life for him.

I think it's time.

Look up this quality of life index.
HHHHHMM.
Our vet recommended it for our senior dog. You can track it over time also to see if they're gently deteriorating which is harder to notice day to day. It helped us a lot.

It's a horrible decision to have to make, and it's hard to know for yourself.

I think it's time. You've given him a lovely life and the kindest thing you can do is let him go peacefully.

It sounds like time. The proposed surgery would be enormous for him. He's lost the dignity of the control of his bladder. He's wandering confused in the night.

The quality of life for both him and you need to be considered and neither of you are in a good place.

I'm sorry, it's hard, but it seems that he's struggling.

I think I just needed some reassurance, thank you all so much.
He has had a brilliant life been spoilt rotten for 16 years. I’m going to call the vets tomorrow to discuss it with them.

thank you all

Rather a day early, than a day too late.

Sorry you are having to think about this decision OP, but I think you already know the answer, good luck with your call tomorrow.

Polkadotties · 04/09/2022 10:43

If you are asking then I think you already know. A day early is better than a day late

Good luck op, I think you know, i wouldn't put a dog with those issues through the surgery either. So hard Flowers
