Supplements for joints

My little old lady 13 year old mini poodle/welsh terrier cross seems to be feeling a little bit old and a bit stiff when she gets up.
She has her annual vaccination and check up this month so I will ask if she has arthritis.
If your dog has arthritis do you give any supplements?

The one I used with my arthritic dog was Jointsure. If you buy 900 tablets on Amazon it works out half the price of Yumove, which is the one vets seem to recommend. But comparing ingredients, Jointsure has more of the active ones.

I give supplements generally and they can help of the dog does have stiffness.

Strongest on the market is Canine Plus from Riaflex and add in their green lipped mussel and you are on one of the best in the market

I dont rate yumove much but people do use it with success and also joint aid.

Joint sure is good and Turmeric with ginger and black pepper capsules are also good.

Ideally, you would start the joint sure before the stiffness - pretty much any time after the dog is fully grown, and matured. Not helpful for you now, but if anyone else is thinking of it, early is good.
Costco also do a Yumove equivalent which comes recommended by friends,

Yumove is great as is cod liver oil. Also ask the vet about Cartrafen or Librela (probably both spelt wrong!) Librela is newer (they are both injections given monthly) but both have made a massive difference to my older, arthritic dogs. Also maybe try hydrotherapy or laser therapy (we’ve had more success with hydro but others swear by laser) We tend to adopt older dogs so I’m always on the look out for new things for arthritis! Oh and Golden Paste - it’s turmeric based, it cannot be given to dogs on certain medications but it’s an amazing anti-inflammatory.

I second Riaflex Joint plus.

We tried yumove but didn't see any improvement.
We've been using Riaflex for a year now and it's made a big difference.

userxx · 04/09/2022 10:09

Yumove is brilliant, I used to but directly from them.

userxx · 04/09/2022 10:11

yumove.co.uk/

There's a trial on at the moment, 2 months for £10.00.

AtillatheHun · 04/09/2022 10:11

My cat has yumove (green lipped mussel / turmeric etc) but I saw yesterday that the company I buy my own supplements from does a pet joint supplement at a much lower price (they don’t do fancy packaging) with all the same ingredients- company is Mobu and the human supplements are excellent!

Isabelle70 · 04/09/2022 10:24

Thanks all I will have a look at all the suggestions. Looks like Yumove and Riaflex are the most popular.
It has made me think I might get some for myself as getting on a bit too 😀

Is she on something for pain from the vet?

I did a Swedish massage course years ago and adapted it when my dog got arthritis, she really seemed to like it.

Im sure there will be plenty of you tube videos showing you how to do it, it’s very easy.

Isabelle70 · 04/09/2022 10:45

@sleepymum50 no pain relief she is only on Vetmedin for congestive heart failure. It's only the last few days that she looks a bit stiff when getting up. She has no issues with getting around and is still mooching in the garden and using the stairs.

She looks bloody fantastic for 13!

Isabelle70 · 04/09/2022 21:59

@userxx she is a bit of a cutie, that was her birthday with homemade carrot cake.

The Yumove tablets arrived today and both dogs took them with no issues. My other dog is 9 so I am sure he could most likely do with a bit of help for the future. He also doesn't like to miss out!

You'll be amazed at how quickly they kick in. My 12 year old border terrier was leaping around like a puppy

Patchyman1 · 10/09/2022 22:53

I have just subscribed yumove, £10 for first box with another free but if you add in code SUB80 you get 80% off first order! We were getting ours through amazon but going direct is cheaper.

helsinkihanzo · 09/12/2024 14:02

Does anyone else use vegetable based joint supplements for their dog? My 10 year old has a shellfish allergy so we use Joint Aid for Dogs and it is amazing stuff! he is like a different dog since we started on this stuff and it's quite a reasonable price too.

My dog is on the Tesco joint supplements, and I started her on green lipped mussel today.
People on FB dog groups go on about golden paste (tumeric basically), and I did make my own for a while, but it made my dog's neck smell like cat pee! I should have added cinnamon.
Basically, I didn't know you could just use the capsules. I take ones from Home Bargains for myself. Tumeric and black pepper. Will they do for my dog?
I started her on supplements years ago, and her vet says no signs of arthritis. She is nearly 14 and a half. She had some leg weakness, but it is neurological so nothing can be done.
