Advice on new dog marking inside

Hello,

We have adopted a sight hound who's otherwise brilliant in the house.

Very cat reactive though which is his only negative feature!

Last week I found a wee against the back door which is part of folding sliding doors so all glass. Assumed part of settling in or had needed a wee.

Today he went bonkers about a cat he'd seen sitting on top of next door's extension roof (hackles up too so seemed spooked rather than excited) and then not long after seems to have urinated on the back door. He'd been out for a walk etc an hour before.

Is there anything we can do about this? (other than cleaning it up! I've ordered some enzyme stuff but postal strike seems to have delayed everything.)

I wondered about curtains but that would be harder to clean actually.

Hi,
Would be interesting to know more, how long have you had him, are these the only times he's toileted indoors, do you know anything about his history?
In my experience (working at rescues) sight hounds have often come from places where they might not be used to living in homes and often aren't toilet trained so I would say it's nothing to be too worried about and to think about going back to toilet training basics;

  • Regular opportunities to go outside (roughly hourly, sometimes keeping them on-lead can help them focus on what they're meant to be doing if just popping him out in the garden).
  • Try and notice any signals he might be needing a wee, e.g., suddenly restless, sniffing around or going to a door.
  • Give him praise and rewards for toileting in the right places.
  • Clean up any accidents inside with enzymatic cleaner (great you've got some on the way).
Other things to consider, is he neutered? This could be scent marking behaviour, especially if he's new into the home he might just be making it smell familiar. Every male foster dog I've had, even the neutered ones that are used to homes and toilet trained have come in and immediately wee'd on something and then never again.

Sometimes with rescues, especially sighthounds which may have had a sheltered life, it takes them a while to feel comfortable going to the toilet on walks, instead preferring their own garden as that's where they feel safest. So if you've noticed he doesn't go to the toilet on walks, might be worth letting him in the garden before and after walks.

The fact it keeps happening at the back door is interesting, is this the same place that he stands to see cats? If so this could be that he just got overexcited in his going mad about the cat and suddenly needed a wee (same thing happens very often with dogs that get excited about visitors coming to the home, they weren't bursting and asking to go out but the excitement means some comes out).
Also, the fact it's happening at the back door makes me think maybe he has been attempting to ask to go out to the garden?

Best of luck with it and enjoy your new dog! :)
