She's a ten year old beagle.
I thought that she had bloat yesterday and took her to the emergency vets.
Brought her home and got her in our vets this morning.
She's started on meds. diuretics and something to open her blood vessels I think.
Has anyone any advice or experience?

Thank you OP, she also has Mitral Valve disease (heart valve failure) on top of the renal failure, she is on medication for the MVD and renal failure, she has to have diuretics to stop the fluid building up in her lungs which MVD causes and it is a balancing act as obviously that has an affect on her kidney disease, my vets have been fabulous and so far she is doing very well (12 months since first diagnosed with both diseases) the vets alter the medication as necessary to keep everything in balance as much as possible, she has heart scans every 3 months and regular blood tests and scans for her kidneys and so far so good, the medication is really doing it’s job and she is currently leading a full and happy pain free life.

@Lonecatwithkitten thank you. I knew it wasn't going to be fixable from what our vet said, or more what he didn't say.
It's not good news back from the vet. He gave us three options. We've chosen option three which is to give her some meds and give her a few comfortable days where we break the news to the children and then book in to have her put to sleep. It's so fucking unfair. She's ten. And I feel incredibly guilty for no apparent reason.

I'm so very sorry to read this.

We lost our darling dog to this disease. She was a rescue staffy that we were told was about seven (our vet thought her nearer to nine). From the start she refused to walk very far and in retrospect we think it was because of her heart problems.

But, we had two years with her - she really was a fantastic girl and had been cruely treated by her previous owners. Despite that treatment, she was l loving and giving girl, who only wanted to be cuddled and loved.

mind you, like a lot of staffys, she never met a human she couldn't love, or another dog she couldn't stand.

I hope, whatever the prognosis, you and your dog share lovely times together

I'm so sorry to hear this, she is a beautiful girl.

My Chinese crested died aged 10 a few years ago and had renal failure. They are a toy breed and often live well into the teens, she was a rescue and I only got her when she was 5. I was devastated. For what it's worth, I found waiting for her to be put to sleep the worst. Knowing the end was coming, and not knowing how poorly she was going to get before she died. She had been off food and sick and the vets couldn't figure it out and kept giving antibiotics thinking she had respiratory issues. By the time she was diagnosed it was severe. She also hated the vets and I was anxious about her going downhill really suddenly and the vets not having availability to PTS at home, so I had it done a bit sooner than some may have done.

It's an awful thing to be going through. You've clearly done the very best for her, and given her a wonderful life. The fact it hurts so much is evidence of just how much you love her xx

We've told the kids tonight. It's been brutal.
I've WhatsApped our vet.

She's always been kept lean because I don't like a dog to be overweight. This means she has no reserves.

So sad for you. Give her an extra big cuddle tonight and know your doing all you with love and doggy will feel this xx

Cafenero35 · 19/11/2022 21:29

😢 she’s gorgeous. I lost mine in May and I’m not gonna lie it was the saddest day of my life and I’ve lost both parents.

But she had a great life and I’ve got her at home with me. Call me mental but I took her hiking with me today. I chat to her when I have my sandwich break. Just cuddle her to death while you can. Really really sorry for you

mellongoose · 19/11/2022 21:31

I'm sorry you're all going through this. Also sorry for your beautiful girl.

We lost our beloved spaniel almost a year ago at just ten. It was very sudden at the end and he was pts within a couple of days.

I also felt guilt as well as feeling robbed of a good few more years with him.

You're doing your best for her. That's all you can do x

PoorlyPooch · 22/11/2022 09:24

She's booked in for tomorrow morning. The older two dc understand and have seen her decline. The younger one is 7 and he knows that the meds aren't working and that she will die soon. He doesn't know when.
He's not one to show his emotions and has been acting out instead. His school know and are ready to jump in with support if he needs it.
Dh and I were supposed to be going together but dd2 is off school ill and I can't bare to think of her sat at home alone whilst we take the dog on her last journey.

Thinking about you and your girl OP.
She's lucky to have had such a family.
Take care xx

BarbaraStan · 23/11/2022 16:01

Thinking of you today OP, it's so incredibly hard. She's a beautiful girl and you have given her a wonderful life x

PoorlyPooch · 23/11/2022 19:01

Thank you. I've posted an updated on a new thread. She went peacefully. I held onto her until the end. Dd1 stayed home from college so her and dd2 were together whilst Dh and I went.
