Dogs anal glands about to rupture

Sorry I just don’t know what to do!
went to the vets a week ago when i noticed they were slightly swollen, vet expressed some but not all, prescribed anti inflammatories and said there was no infection.
it got worse, they got more swollen we went back they said still no infection but take some antibiotics

we’re two days on from that, they’re humongous and purple now, dog is miserable
and its both anal glands the poor thing

the vet can get us in at 6pm earliest but says there’s likely not really anything they can do since they’ve already looked twice, expressed them and prescribed antibiotics

I don’t want to just keep going back, but I also don’t want to just wait for a rupture and infection if I can avoid it?!

dog generally has a good diet, which we add a lot of fibre to, following the vets advice.

We've only ever had to deal with this once and tbh it didn't clear up until they ruptured and could be effectively rinsed out 🤢 dog was not happy and took a 10 day course of antibiotics after. Never had any problems since.

Oh no that’s not what I wanted to hear!!
dog due to go to doggy hotel for a few days soon too for a holiday we’ve got booked with the kids. Was really praying we could get it sorted by then
poor thing is breaking my heart!

Go to another vets for second opinion. I wish we had - our first vets messed up so much and put DDog through unnecessary op which has caused so many problems since. Missed diagnosed. New vet sorted it straight away and now DDog is on steroids for life

Generally there's not much the vets can do until they rupture.

But long-term, I would make sure he has enough fibre in his diet to try and help things along. Adding all-bran or weetabix to meals can really help.

Blindsblindsblinds · 31/08/2022 15:47

I am not sure about short term but long term puréed pumpkin (you can get tins from Sainsbury’s waitrose etc) and carrots helped my boy

i put the pumpkin on a lickimat with plaque off

bur yes I would also go to another vets - could they not pre emptivley rupture the anal glands? (I don’t know is that is a thing)

Ineedwinenow · 31/08/2022 15:50

Is there definitely nothing In then? I do my dogs glads fortnightly myself as she has issues with them and they can go really swollen if I have not done them by the third week

Ineedwinenow · 31/08/2022 15:50

Should add I do the external method not internal 😆

Wombat27A · 31/08/2022 15:53

Yep, the vet said we would get into trouble for trying to express them ourselves.

They heal quickly after rupture but it's very painful.

I feed my mutts porridge to avoid issues.

Ineedwinenow · 31/08/2022 16:06

You can have them removed so that might be a solution if your dog is regularly suffering 😢

@Pumpkinbite

"I don’t want to just keep going back,"

why not, when it's your dog's wellbeing that's in question??

Go back to the vet and take his/her advice

goodness me the doghouse is always so hostile.
ive taken ddog twice, im booked in for a third apt this evening, the vet themselves said there’s likely nothing they can do
I’m here looking for further advice to help ddog

but thanks for your comment about my dogs well-being
thank god you were here to remind me.

Thanks Everyone, I’m just feeling so sorry for ddog who is clearly feeling v sad today

i was told to get them expressed every 3 months, but it’s only been two now so I think we may need to make it more regular

i feed good quality food and add in veggies. Then i alternate on porridge weetabix and branflakes a few times a week and also add in fibre supplements

this is the third time it’s happened in 4 years so I wouldn’t say it’s all the time, but it’s so long lasting when it does happen!

it looks like the options are to wait for them to rupture, or have ddog sedated and for the vet to rupture them, which they can’t do today. I’ll be surprised if they don’t go themselves before the earliest appointment i can get.
