My puppy was on raw but it was a faff having to keep adding vegetables, so we tried out Butternut but she's not enjoyed that

Any ideas where to go now?

All my 3 have the best poos on Natural Instinct. It’s a complete, ready prepared raw food. A furry rabbit ear a couple of times a week is a good way to bulk out poos, supposedly a natural dewormer too.

@forumsempronii thank you so much for articulating where I failed!

I'm a big RAW fan which is why I was keen to try it but it's not for us, for now

I'll look on All About Dogs and all the brands everyone's suggested, again thank you all

@RestingMurderousFace natural instinct is what we were on, but I don't have much freezer space so I spent a lot of time back and forth to the shop, the bricks are good and a space saver but that's what I was having to add vegetables too

If you like raw why don't you use nutrament

It's easy to use and a complete food

mountainsunsets · 30/08/2022 13:20

Cait73 · 30/08/2022 08:07

@mountainsunsets she's under daily vet care as we speak, she has antibiotics anti inflammatories and anti nausea we have to go for daily injections as she's not eating so I can't tablet her

I've thrown all her food away which is why I'm looking at getting something in for when she recovers

At the moment she's only managing a tiny bit of scrambled egg and some chicken

If he temperature isn't down today they're taking her in for bloods and an ultrasound

So you're absolutely right; black poo is NOT okay

Oh bless her, hopefully she'll be okay soon.

If you find she's intolerant to chicken, white fish is a good alternative and you can serve it with the rice or potato. A common flavour for dog food is salmon and potato and it's often as the alternative flavour for chicken and rice :)

My own dog can't tolerate too much lamb in his diet or he ends up with an upset stomach - I think quite a few dogs are intolerant to stuff unfortunately!

Sunflowergin · 30/08/2022 13:20

I use canagan wet & dry food mixed together

the wet food is to expensive for me to feed on its own but mixed with kibble makes it more reasonable and it’s one of the few feeds our ddog consistently eats

I ended up forking out for a chest freezer, so only have to order it directly every couple of months. We go through 10kg a week though, hungry devils!

Some raw brands made my littlest constipated but the Natural Instincts have fruit and veg in them and everyone's poos have been spot on. Touch wood!

Millie's Wolfheart kibble with a bit of Nature Diet mashed in is our non-raw choice. But anal glands were often an issue. Always something isn't there, lol.

This is a good website to use to weed out the good from the bad and then try a few to see which she likes??

Cait73 · 30/08/2022 16:17

@RestingMurderousFace I can't get a chest freezer, but yes that would definitely help

I didn't even have room for the nuggets with vegetables I was just buying the plain blocks

Soubriquet · 30/08/2022 16:34

I fed my two barking heads. They have a bowl to graze on all day. They really enjoy this. I then give them butchers wet food at night.

If you’re interested, I can give you a voucher for 20% off.

It also comes in little kibble for little dogs

Natural Instinct comes in 500g or 1kg tubs not blocks. Think we're talking about different brands. Not that it matters if you want to get away from raw.

Hope you find something that suits.

My elderly dog (not the corgi) had his teeth done yesterday and the vet suggested I feed him wet food for a couple of days. On the advise of our local pet store I bought Fotherglade, he would not touch it, he's quite a picky eater , he's prone to stomach upsets/constipation and has always eaten dried food. I've found he loves Vets Kitchen sensitive I get it in Tesco and I guess its mid price, and he is doing very well on it. My corgi, who I suspect would eat any old crap, loves Cannigan (it transformed our cat from a mangy scrawny bag of bones in too a refulgent glossy coated monster), it is expensive; but he looks fab on it sadly the old dog wont touch that either.

solvendie · 31/08/2022 20:53

We use Guru cold pressed surf n turf and Butchers in gravy wet food. Both have high ratings on all about dog food. He gets extra eggs/fish as well. He’s a working GR who is walked 8 miles a day. He’s lean. He does get a dodgy tummy if he’s swallowed sea water (or other ditch water!) but otherwise he seems to enjoy this and his coat, temperament and energy levels are good.

sborber · 31/08/2022 20:57

Check out ProDog Raw OP - they have different options and meat combinations... Some 80:10:10, some pure and some with veg mixed in already. The latter is what we purchase for our maltese - she's been on a raw diet since 6 months old. We get 7kg worth of food a month and with delivery it costs around £40. You can sign up for monthly orders though that help you save.

If not ProDog Raw there's also Naturaw and Natural Instinct that we've also used in the past.

Floralnomad · 31/08/2022 21:21

Mine is now on Nature Diet wet , we buy selection packs from Zooplus and he also has the senior lite because he’s 12 and prone to getting porky , I don’t get the fish ones or the packs with fish in as they stink . It rates quite highly and is extremely cheap for what it is . My fussy dog is very happy with it and his bowels are excellent . They also do a small dog variety which may interest you at @Cait73 as I know Peggy is only small . Hope she gets well soon .

I've just switched from forthglade to butchers loaf which is cheaper and ddog LOVES it. Nutritionally its excellent .

Was that a switch from the forthglade trays? I’ve been looking for a cheaper alternative, not least because the larger boxes which are better value are often out of stock recently. Ours has a tray a day plus dry food, would butchers be a straight swap?

stillherenow · 01/09/2022 09:07

Yes that's what I swapped . If you look on the all about dog food website butchers isn't much lower in quality and I think ddog prefers them ! I've done it gradually ie half a tray with half a can but no problems and my ddog has a sensitive tummy.

We use the forthglade trays, our black lab didn’t get on at all with dry food.

Waitrose are selling 12 trays for 18 at the moment. Amazon have just cancelled this months subscription.

I’m also interested in this food but the reviews on sainsburys seem to say it has changed consistency recently, have you noticed anything? People are suggesting more water is being added

Cait73 · 02/09/2022 07:58

@Floralnomad thanks I'll check that one out, we're still on plain chicken but hoping to progress in the next couple of days

stillherenow · 03/09/2022 14:41

@Tulipvase he's only been on it a week so I don't know if it has been changed, the last lot I had of forthglade looked a bit iffy though! He gets very excited for Butchers and it's less messy than a tray so I think we are sticking with it .

stillherenow · 03/09/2022 14:45

Mine is a large dog of 32kg (but not that active) and now has 2 cans of butchers a day, half a can of chappie (this is good for his tummy) , dog pate cut up as treats for training, a bone chew, a lickimat (yoghurt / banana) and a kong with sardine or porridge or sometimes an egg. Also I have some kibble which sometimes I Chuck across the lawn for him to seek. Seems happy on this !
