Caring for DDog after spay

DDog needs to be spayed in the next couple of months and I’m trying to pre-plan as much as possible to avoid any issues/ make her recovery as smooth as possible.

Long time dog owner of mostly male dogs but have also had one female before, who was spayed but under very different circumstances, where she could and would fully rest for the time it took for her to recover. I’m a bit worried that this one will be trickier for a number of reasons!

DDog is incredibly excitable: runs around like a mad thing with my DS all day long: jumps on and off the sofa, runs up and down the stairs, jumps onto and off his bed and mine etc etc. This is my main concern: that she’ll be difficult to keep calm and relaxed for up to two weeks after the op! DS won’t be a problem; he’s four but will understand that she’ll need to be left to
recover but she loves playing with him so much that I don’t think she’s going to understand why we’re trying to stop her!

We do have a crate, which we use occasionally, so I could use that if necessary. We also have stair gates so she can be prevented from coming upstairs at all. What do we think? Will this be enough? Any tips on how to stop her running around the garden, or will she just not feel like doing so?

Thanks!

Hiya, def use the crate as that will be really helpful. Encourage more frequent use beforehand if you can.

You can get collars that are like aeroplane pillows (more comfortable than a cone!) off Amazon to prevent licking the area.

She's probably going to sleep a lot when she first comes home so prepare a quiet space for that.

When you do walkies, keep her on her lead for a few days. You could even use the lead indoors to keep her under control if you're worried.

Shouldn't be that bad though and your vet will give you lots of advice ☺️

Ddog2 was spayed yesterday. She is totally hyperactive usually so I've not been looking forward to it.

She slept briefly on coming home- I left her in the donut bed, asleep or so I thought whilst I went to get a cup of tea. Come back 2 minutes later and she's jumped on the sofa...

Total panic attack with even the soft cone so we have used one of the nappies we bought for her season, wrapped it round her tummy and secured it with the velcro like a belly band. It's secure and she can't get it off.

She seems to be in no pain. She came home with a pain killing shot already done and some tablets which we were to give one this morning.

She's bright and perky, eating drinking etc as normal and tail up! Fully interested in what's going on.

She's definitely sleeping more than usual but when she's awake she's awake! Joining in barking with the dogs across the valley and if she wasn't confined to a lead ourdoors she'd be charging around as usual. It's going to be a very long 2 weeks!

I'm sure in a day or two she'll be totally back to her high octane self. I can't see any way to keep her quiet. She does sleep in a crate at night but she'll not be happy to be confined. At the moment she is attached by her lead to the coffee table...

We got ours a surgical suit rather than the cone. This could be completely wrong BUT I figured I couldn’t sleep with a cone on my head, and if I’m trying to heal getting a good nights sleep is important!

We failed miserably at stopping her jumping up… but for the first few days she didn’t want to and just slept. Once she was feeling ok she wanted to jump up, and by then her belly was looking ok.

She's in the garden at the moment happily barking at dogs across the village!

I've got her on a 5m lead attached to the garden table so she can wander about a bit (and nibble on windfall apples) but can't charge around or get her wound dirty in a flower bed.

Nappy is still attached around the middle. I did mean to get a body suit but it never quite happened.
