Butternut box experiences

Uncertain111 · 26/08/2022 17:01

Hi I’m thinking of slowly transitioning my 11 week pup onto this wet food to help avoid constipation etc. Looking at butternut box and just wondered what others’ experiences with this have been. Thanks

We've tried tried that one sorry but can't be much use. Which food did the breeder recommend?

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/08/2022 17:09

These reviews from All About Dog Food might be helpful, even if I wasn't Wink

Our dog is very fussy and not that interested in food (unless we are eating it). We now use butternut and does eat it so we are delighted. We tried lots of things before trying butternut so he was one before we switched to it. His poos are also now vastly superior!

IaltagDhubh · 26/08/2022 17:16

Extremely fussy dog didn’t like it, unfortunately. Their delivery etc was fine though.

I'm loving the thought of vastly superior dog poops. Do you think he brags about them to his doggie friends? Grin

hattie43 · 26/08/2022 17:19

I enquired about this but it was £197 a month for my dog and I find it cheaper to go to the butcher for him .

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/08/2022 17:20

£197 a month for one dog? Shock

doobedooboom · 26/08/2022 17:23

Our dog loved it but his tummy didn't - very bad poos. But he has a really sensitive stomach so suspect it was specific to him. But honestly he loved loved loved the food - very sad he can't have it!

Moonlaserbearwolf · 26/08/2022 17:26

We've used Butternut box for the past two years and deliveries are very good. Really well packaged with recyclable material and ice bags. Our delivery is often in the porch for several hours before I can collect it, and we've never had an issue with the food defrosting.

Just once last year there was a supply issue and the box came late, but comms from the company was excellent. They gave us warning about the supply issue and I bought some tins of Lily's Kitchen from the local pet shop (ok, but surprisingly more expensive than Butternut Box).

Taste wise, our dog is very picky and seems to enjoy all of the flavours.

Really convenient to be able to put the pouches in the freezer.

Menopants · 26/08/2022 17:29

its good but I got fed up filling the freezer with dog food

GiantCheeseMonster · 26/08/2022 17:32

I give my dog butternut mixed with Wolfworthy kibble which helps keep the cost down. Also, it’s not clear from the website but if you select a less frequent delivery with more pouches in it, the price is much cheaper - if you have the freezer space it’s worth doing. My dog loves his meals!

Moonlaserbearwolf · 26/08/2022 17:32

Also, for comparison to the poster above, our 10kg dog costs about £45/month in Butterbox. I supplement with a bit of kibble approx £15/month.

No idea if £2 per day to feed a smallish dog is reasonable, but it works for us.

TheSmallestOneWasMadeline · 26/08/2022 17:37

My dog loves it and because he is small it isnt hideously expensive. We also supplement with kibble to bulk it out a bit as I find the portions a bit measly even though they are calculated by weight/activity levels.

Elphame · 26/08/2022 17:38

Both mine were transitioned on to this as soon as we brought them home. One is now 5 and the other 18 months. Takes about a week for full transition if you do it properly. We rather rushed it with pup 2 as she was raiding the more appetising looking dinner in the other bowl!

It's lovely quality food and gets wolfed down.

I don't eat heavily processed food myself and I didn't want to feed it to my dogs.

Haha he's a 62kg Bullmastiff

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 26/08/2022 19:55

I got some for my fussy itchy fox terrier. She likes it, (she doesn’t love anything), but the upside was her itchiness has gone. So, she has chappie or James wellbeloved kibble in the morning, and a pouch at night, and no more ridiculously expensive apoquel.

Ah that's probably what DDog thinks she is but she's actually 7kg Grin

After the intro boxes it’s very expensive and my dog doesn’t like carrots & they feature in most meals so I found orange cubes all around his bowl 🙈

My terrier is on Butternut now, suggested by our vet who has put her own dog on it. She transitioned well, she has a very sensitive system, prone to (sometimes serious) bouts of colitis, so the vet said to keep her on the chicken one. She is good on it so far, it has been a few weeks now. Her gut wasn’t always happy on her previous food, it is better on this.

My issue with butternut is that it’s such a small portion, yes it’s going to be good for health but why is it so small? It surely cannot be filling.

The portions are small because the quality is so high so they don't need much.
If you compare for example the quantities recommended for eg James Wellbeloved and Wolfworthy, a similar principal occurs as Wolfworthy is higher quality so the dog's need less.

ACynicalDad · 08/09/2024 23:15

I was a bit worried mine is shitting bricks with his first poo of the day, but have also heard that pushing out something solid keeps the anal glands emptying so isn’t too bad. We’re on forthhlade for what it’s worth and seems good (he loves the adult version but didn’t like the puppy one).
