Pop trouble!

Our little dog is 8 and for the last 3 weeks seems to have developed a problem with pooing.

He's always been healthy, eats well, has plenty of walks but he keeps having sloppy poos in the house. So much so it's nearly daily and I'm on edge everyday because I'm always worried he's going to have an accident.

He had an health check at the vets last month and seems healthy. Worming, jabs etc all upto date. He's on long term meds for itching but is fine with them.

Doesn't have human food etc.

We have two small children and the pooing all over the carpets isn't good!

At a loss as I wouldn't think he was in the last stages of life as he's as fit as a fiddle and the average lifespan for his breed is 14yrs.

I'm going to book him into the vets again but in the meantime maybe change his food and get some dog nappies...

Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Can I ask what food you have him on?

poordog · 26/08/2022 14:41

He's on Aldi's moist & meaty chunks. Has been for years.

I'd try a tube of probiotic paste. It is unlikely to do any harm and can work wonders.

Second the probiotic paste, he might have picked up something whilst on a walk...

poordog · 26/08/2022 15:13

Thank you! I will get some.

I'd recommend dry food rather than the wet. Wet can cause tummy issues and is very sugary. Basically anything with at least 24-27% protein will be a decent food.

poordog · 26/08/2022 16:31

Thanks. His daily is dry. We only treat him to a tin on his birthday and Christmas.

He's had another accident this afternoon but seems fine in himself.

I really hope it is just a bug or something.

I know it's not popular on here but talk to the vet about changing him to Chappie or Butchers as they are often recommended by vets for DDogs with sensitive tummies Flowers

LightsDownLowDancingSlow · 26/08/2022 16:38

Get him booked in to see the vet as soon as you can. There do many things it could be.

In the meantime I’d give him chicken and rice only. Hope he’s ok.

When our new rescue dog went through a phase of pooing overnight i put a throw down on the floor and she always pood on this which makes it easy to puck up and throw straight in the washing machine -might be worth a try?

BadlydoneHelen · 26/08/2022 17:08

I've been told by someone who works at a rescue that when dogs come in with or get bad tummies they feed them pumpkin which firms up the stool: might be worth a try

SleepingAgent · 26/08/2022 17:16

When my dog has an upset tummy, we give him plain scrambled eggs which helps to settle his tum (and binds up the poo).

However my dog and his breed are known for tum issues. It doesn't sound like it's usual for yours so I'd get him seen as soon as possible.

Well drained boiled brown rice with some chicken or tuna, tinned chappie is excellent, always recommended by vets.
