What lead do you use?

I'm after some lead advice. We have a 5mo GR who is a bit pully and we have a cheapo lead we go with her first collar (now outgrown) that's giving me rope burn!

We were gifted a purple Dog Copehagen collar and I'm considering the lead that goes with it but it's £32 and I want to be sure.

She had a Perfect Fit harness for walks so the collar is irrelevant really.

What do you use?

I use a halti double ended lead with an Indi dog Houdini harness but I clip both ends on the top d ring . I swapped from a single clip lead as I had a lead clip failure near a road so like the security of 2 clips when I’m near roads . My dog doesn’t pull and walks nicely . The advantage of the Halti is that if we are at a NT place where he has to stay on a lead I can revert to single clip / longer lead arrangement

forumsempronii · 26/08/2022 12:35

Always use a douible ended tuff stuff lead They come in many collars free embroidery if you want it. However good grip, easy to wash, last years and years and yeats.

Can be worn across your body when dog is off lead and both ends neatly fit into the clips (unlike halti which always leaves a big loop)

forumsempronii · 26/08/2022 12:35

Many colours! and also different widths

Stellaris22 · 26/08/2022 12:37

Halti dual clip lead with a Perfect Fit harness, it’s been sturdy and great.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 26/08/2022 12:38

A bright reflective green one from Asda. Used to have bones on but they’ve faded now! 2 pound. It’s perfect and has never let us down.

Saucery · 26/08/2022 12:41

Halti double ended. Adaptable to all walks on lead, whether it’s a double clipped next to the road one or a full length sniffy explore. We even clipped 2 together to make a long line on holiday because the garden had a low fence with sheep on the other side.

SpotOnMyBot · 26/08/2022 12:42

the perfect fit lead has a fleece lined handle so you don't burn your hands. It's the only lead we use now as it's the only one that doesn't hurt if you have a pully dog! They are so comfortable, we actually bought another one (get the large one as it's thicker)

forumsempronii · 26/08/2022 12:47

Not been a problem this year but I hate the perfect fit leads when they get wet. They are so thick that they hold the water and you can ring it out! I find them really cold in my hands when wet.

Allthegoodnamestakken · 26/08/2022 12:48

Also use Halti double ended leads, would however love a recomendation for ones that are very similar but longer as when I wrap it round my waist its just a bit to short for my dog who walks on a collar, fine for the one on a harness though. I also wish it came in prettier colours.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 26/08/2022 12:51

We use the Perfect Fit and the Halti double ended. The Perfect Fit is nice to handle with the fleece layer - I prefer that one in colder weather. I probably use the Halti one more though as it's waterproof and I have a water loving Golden Retriever!

SimonaRazowska · 26/08/2022 13:06

We use horse leads, about £6

Tie a few knots in them for grippiness

What is GR btw?

We have a DH and GH Grin

Pinkypie86 · 26/08/2022 13:11

EzyDog - with a traffic harness. So you can really hold them tight if/when you cross the road.
Had for 2 years and it's bloody brilliant - padded loop too for comfort.

Mbear · 26/08/2022 13:29

I got the Dog Copenhagen lead to go with the collar (the Urban trail range) - I think it’s really good. It has multiple grab handles which I like and the collar has double d rings for extra security. Not cheap though. However I got them from a lovely independent shop based in the Lake District, so all good.

mountainsunsets · 26/08/2022 13:31

We use a Halti double-ended lead. Nowadays he just walks on a leather collar but when he was younger and pulled like a train we used a Eagloo harness and had one end on the chest D-ring and one on the back D-ring for control.

Badger1970 · 26/08/2022 13:33

Ruffwear. They've got really good clips on and are super safe to use as well as comfy to hold. It's the front range style that have got extra loops close to their collars that you can grab if you need to.

Worth every penny.

Mekuti harness and lead

Tuff stuff

Loads of colours

They also have a handle at each end with allows you to shorten it or you can clip to the first clip for loose lead walking or have a full length to give more freedom. It has an extra length to it than the halti double ended leads.

sewinginmyfreetime · 26/08/2022 13:54

My boy is terrified of strange dogs and will snap if approached so he is always on a lead. I couldn’t find one I liked so I made a 10 metre biothane one with a clip at each end so he can be on both clips with the length looped up for crossing the road or pavement walking, but can be given a lot of freedom when we get to a park or place to sniff that is safe. It takes a lot of practice, but now I find it no more bother than a “standard” lead.
I highly recommend biothane as a material, nice and grippy even when wet, does hold water, doesn’t smell and is wipe clean.

sewinginmyfreetime · 26/08/2022 13:55

Sorry, should say “doesn’t hold water”, not that it does!

Thankyou, I looked at these posted up thread and the colours are great but my current halti ones are 2m long so these are shorter. Tempted to get my girl who wears a harness one in a pretty colour but my boy needs something a bit longer. I find with it round my waist and clipped to his collar if he walks directly infront of me I am almost falling over him he absolutely hates every harness we have tried and as he is chill enough to walk on a collar I gave up.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/08/2022 14:56

Halti double ended here too. So flexible and practical

Scaredypup · 26/08/2022 19:53

I have loads. Half I double ended which has helped with training as I clip one end to the front of her harness and one to the back and it stops pulling. I don’t like using it like this though as I prefer to be able to wrap the lead round my hand a bit, or put the handle over my wrist if I need to use my hands, and when it’s used double ended I don’t feel like I have a good grip. It’s also really short when used that way. I don’t like using it round the waist either, as again I find it short- my dogs little.

my Favourite is a waist lead from pets at home, it’s bright yellow has a handle near the bottom for extra control, it’s soft and is a bungee lead so I don’t feel it so much if she pulls. I can only wear this one somewhere less exciting though as if she pulls it’s uncomfortable.

I have an extendable which I only used when she was in season as I hated it, but actually quite enjoyed using it. Only in open quiet places though. Doesn’t give any control and only works if your dog listens to you otherwise you can’t rein them back in.

Also have 2 different long lines, 5m and 10m.

Thanks everyone!
Lots to think about here.

Gloves!

It's taken my nearly two years to get to a point where loose-lead walking is consistent and his reactivity doesn't take me by surprise but in the meantime I've worn grippy gloves because when he did pull, it didn't matter which lead I was using it would burn my hand.

Worth thinking about while pup is in training. You can stop wearing them when he's reliably not pulling/lunging whatever it is that's burning your hands now.
