Water/Night time weeing

Hi, I have a bit of an issue with my 6 month old pup. He is a large breed (approx 30kg currently) and always been great day and night with toilet training etc. He's never had to wee that often but always drunk plenty of water, he's slept through the night from 9 weeks, probably 11pm-6/7am so not a huge stretch (my pug would happily do a 12 hr night or longer!)

Since the weather has been much hotter he has obviously been drinking a significant amount more. He is now getting up around every 2 hrs in the night on average and has been for the last couple of weeks for a wee. We have always left water out at all times but he will drink a full bowl in one go which is at least a litre so I am guessing this is the issue.

I have always been told never to remove water but I cannot sustain this amount of getting up every night. He is more than capable of holding it longer than 2 hrs as he does so in the daytime and always has at night. I don't get the feeling there's a medical issue at all but just wondered if anyone had any ideas to help.

You need to get a vet check. There are many physical issues that can cause this.

Do not withhold the water.

You can't withhold water.

I'd be going to the vet and querying diabetes - ddog is diabetic and excessive drinking was the first and only sign.

Thanks all, I just assumed it was because its been 25-30° rather than medical. I'll get him checked out. I've never withheld water but wondered if I was doing something wrong with allowing so much in the night.

vet… suddenly drinking more is absolutely something that could be a medical issue

Mine always gets up and drinks lots of water if the room is hot. That makes him want to pee more or generally mooch about the garden as it's cooler.

I have found that if we can cool the room down (he sleeps on our bed) then he doesn't get up to drink/pee.

Therefore I would be looking at how you can get him and the room cooler. We have the window open and quite frankly it's a bit cold for me in the early hours but I will take that over getting up to let mine out frequently in the night.

It is definitely ridiculously hot in our house, he is an alaskan malamute so the heatwave hasn't been fun for him, we have kept him cool at the beach very early in the mornings. It has only been since the heatwaves that he has drunk more so not necessarily for no reason. I am sleeping downstairs with him as he was too hot upstairs but I will try and see how I can make it cooler downstairs for him.

I will definitely speak to the vet though just in case as obviously want to rule out anything medical.
