First season but going on holiday next week

My 13 month old pup has just started bleeding today so it looks like her first season has arrived. However we are all due to go on holiday Monday for 5 days ( UK caravan park). Can I still take her? I've googled etc and waiting on a call back from our vet but everything I've read says not too. Will it be too distressing for her? I don't know what to do now.

Our 10 month pup has just had first season. She seemed to cope ok; she looked very sore but was fine in herself. We just kept her on lead for walks and tried to avoid other dogs just in case. She did have a weekend in kennels and a few trips to daycare (season lasted a few weeks) but she was kept with female dogs and there wasn't an issue

Depends on the dog. My big girl swells up like a baboon and drips heavily. A season is hard work for her and she wouldn't appreciate doing much. My little girl is very neat and tidy and takes things in her stride. Don't go places with other dogs and keep her on the lead at all times.

I wouldn’t if there are going to be other dogs on the caravan park, it will be stressful for her and the other dogs.

At the very least it will be distressing for other dogs that are there. Leave her at home with a pet sitter or family.

Please don't take her on holiday. It's so unfair on her and on all the other dogs and their owners. Males will run for miles to get to an in-season bitch and you won't be able to let her off the lead or take her anywhere with lots of dogs - basically, you'll need to walk her very early in the mornings/late at night and keep her in the caravan the rest of the time. It won't be much of a holiday.

Someone will have to stay home with her, or if you're very lucky you might find a sitter but it's very, very last minute.

Thank you all for your replies. I’m going to stay home with her and our other dog while my husband takes the kids. I guess a few days without them can still be classed as a holiday for me 😄

I think that’s a win for you OP 😁

This happened to us at the beginning of the month. Started her first season 2 days before holiday. We still went, did lots of countryside walks where compared to our city streets we saw hardly any dogs. We used an extendable lead which I’ve never used before but it worked well. No boy dogs got stressed, a few had a sniff and owners happily put them on lead once I told them. We’re 3 weeks into the season now and only now do the boy dogs seem a bit more eager, the most fertile bit is after the bleeding.
we’ve still walked as normal, just no off lead. I’ve had no issues. No boys chasing you down the road like I was lead to believe.
please go on your holiday!

Scaredypup · 17/08/2022 23:04

We know several uneutered males too, that we have seen on walks and it hasn’t been stressful for either.

TooHotToTangoToo · 17/08/2022 23:07

She'll be fine, you can get nappies for them if the bleeding is bad.

She might be a bit out of sorts and want to cuddle more

Just be careful walking her as she'll be of more interest to make dogs, keep her on the lead.

I have 2 males and 1 female, when the female was on heat, the males were a bit interested and we split them up when not in the room, but I didn't experience the issues some have said about males running miles to get to an in season. Ours didn't fuss with a door between them

MarmiteCoriander · 17/08/2022 23:10

Our pup went through this a few months ago. I bought baby nappies from lidl and cut a tail hole out. They were 1/4 of the price of 'dog' nappies and just as effective. Inside the house she had those on and it was taken off when in the garden.

Its not great timing, but you have done the right thing by staying back- if no one else can mind her.
