Toilet training a rehomed 4 year old

I've taken on a 4 year old king charles who is just wonderful. Her previous owners couldnt look after her and never toilet trained her. She used to be left outside the majority of her time so just went when she needed it. I cant be sure but i think she was hit at times as she has cowered when ive made an unexpected movement. She also won't go in or out of the house on her own.

I've left the door open to the garden so she has free access but doesn't really like to go on her own. Im taking her on little walks early in the morning and late at night (when cooler) and she wees but wont poo. I'll sit with her outside but she also won't go. She just wants to poo when on her own, which means in the house when im not looking. Any suggestions?

Poor thing has probably been hit for going indoors and now associates the act of pooing with punishment.

You have no alternative but to take long walks around the time you know she poos - with mine it would be feeding her in the morning then waiting an hour - then a decent walk. I've got a shy poo-er - she prefers to hide in the shrubbery and is reluctant to poo when on lead. When she had a leg injury the only way to get her to go was the normal hour long walk - no poo- then take the other dogs home and put her on a flexi lead and take her out again. This meant no other dogs around and she could go to the end of the flexi (I also turned away, having noted where the poo was).

You might find a long flexi helps as she might feel safer with distance between you.

Can you take her out in the garden regularly but close the door afterwards so she's outside and but alone?

Then as she builds confidence and poos on walks, add in a command and start using that in the garden.

Thanks both. A shy pooer made me chuckle. She also doesnt like me watching her eat. Ive got a long lead but maybe im not give her enough time to go, and I'll turn my back.
I was a bit nervous about shutting her out in case she panicked but i could try a couple of minutes at a time.
