Protection against feline horde!

My NDNs have 11 cats, all rescues. The feline neighbours are making sure I have no wild birds or wildlife (5 shrews, 4 birds, 2 nestlings this week and that's just my side) as they pop in and out of the garden. The NDNs also have big rescue dogs not allowed out of their house because of cats/livestock in their small garden - unless the dogs are walked. My question is: what can kindly deter the cats? I have a fence on three sides, but the cats scramble over. Also an open area to the back which is hedging.

11 cats??

How big is the house? I hope all those animals aren't living in overcrowded conditions.

hose or waterpistol

crosstalk · 10/08/2022 18:30

@Leafy3 I think they are, but most are out all the time.

@godmum56 Fine at times during the day. Not viable at night or dawn/dusk when we are either asleep or eating. Ditto sprinklers since under hosepipe ban.

If in any doubt, op, I'd consider reporting to rspca. That's a lot of rescue animals in one home!

For your garden plenty of cat proofing things for the fence etc (Google or amazon) and yes hose and water pistols (not supersoakers or pressured hoses though).

You say they're out most/all of the time, so it's probably not a welfare issue.

There's not much you can do to stop cats, though, unless you pay a small fortune to cat-proof your garden.

if you can teach the cats that it might happen that will make them more wary. I find this stuff helps too but you need to use it generously and keep it topped up. www.amazon.co.uk/Vitax-225g-Pepper-Animal-Repellent/dp/B000TASTWC/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1QS1KB3RQYZZG&keywords=cat+pepper+for+garden&qid=1660159103&sprefix=cat+pepper%2Caps%2C92&sr=8-6

You used to be able to buy something called Zoo Poo to put along the fence line that was supposed to keep them out, believe it was supposed to be lion dung or some such. Don’t know if you can still get it or if the stench is obvious to people as well as cats.
