We have a 3 year old rescue bulldog, we took her on at 1 year and over the years learnt she has many allergies, typical bulldog!

Anyway the last 3 to 4 weeks her back end is absolutely rancid, the smell is so thick it feels like you are chewing on it!

We had an allergy test done and found she is allergic to:

All birds
Fish oil
Milk
Barley
Oats

Apples
Cheddar cheese

We have her on a lamb and veg gluten free kibble. I don't have room to store raw.

As far as we are aware she hasn't eaten anything she shouldn't be. She does go in the canal and drink the water (always has done) maybe once a week but with the hot weather she isn't being walked as much as normal but plays in the garden in the mornings and evenings.

Her skin and folds are clean, these normally get sore and yeasty when she has had something she shouldn't

We also tried Prokolin for 4 days to see if she had a upset tummy but no change. This has working in the past after 214 hours.

I have be booking in for the vets Friday afternoon but can anyone offer any suggestions what may be causing this?

Lamb is high fat - could this be gall stones?

Our pooch has many allergies food and contact with grass so everything was hard enough then he developed the ‘wind’ which sounds like you describe and it turned out to be gallstones. Nasty and painful for him too.

it’s been treated with tablets and painkillers

Crazyone84 · 10/08/2022 14:58

@DotDotaDash that's a start, thank you,

As she cannot have chicken, turkey, duck or fish it only leaves lamb and beef for "flavours" in kibble

What were the main symptoms of gall stones apart from the wind?

Are you sure you can't store raw? Mine has human grade minced beef, among other things, so it really isn't a storage issue.
Yours would need a bone source that's not chicken, which might be harder. You can buy mince from the butcher that has bone in it.

It's unlikely to be more expensive than high spec kibble!

DotDotaDash · 10/08/2022 15:05

In the beginning it was the wind only.

Over time bouts of vomiting and standing in a praying position head down on front paws bum in the air or when lying down propping head up high sort of stretching neck and chest

Our vet started talking about ‘novel proteins’ but then provided something low fat, at a price, that he is doing exceptionally well on.

Crazyone84 · 10/08/2022 15:15

@DotDotaDash When we see the vet Friday, I will mention gallstones to them and see what they think. Thanks for the info
@picklemewalnuts once you exclude birds and fish, the massive world of dog food becomes very small! A lot of the beef and lamb flavours fill in with chicken fat or fish oil. We do have her on a good quality kibble which isn't the cheapest but it does seem to suit and she has been fine on this for a good few months before the wind started so that is leading me to believe it isn't a food thing.

What a shame! Ours is on raw because it seemed like the quickest way to identify what was causing the problem.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 10/08/2022 18:18

Have you tried some of the more exotic flavoured foods - things like rabbit, goat, reindeer, wild boar etc?

www.uniquepets.co.uk might be a good place to start, or ZooPlus.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/08/2022 18:26

Dog biscuits containing charcoal help with digestion & reduce wind. You will have to do a bit of research & find ones that don't contain meat fat that your pooch has issues with.

Soubriquet · 10/08/2022 18:30

If you can afford it, you can get game and venison flavoured food too

Crazyone84 · 10/08/2022 19:12

@CoffeeBeansGalore she has charcoal biscuits already and did help with the standard wind expected from a bulldog! 🤪

@sunsetsandsandybeaches thanks, I'll take a look. I was looking into a insert based brand but pretty expensive and still contained fish oil!

Yeah, that must be so frustrating - I know lots of food contains chicken or poultry too. But definitely have a look at some of the more unusual flavours if you can - my dog loves wild boar and buffalo, and he's had camel and ostrich treats too, which are good for dogs with allergies.

Justalittlebitblondie · 10/08/2022 19:32

Our dog had this - she was guzzling food without chewing and was gulping lots of air down - we got her a bowl which slows her eating and she is a lot, lot happier and no more has farts like chemical warfare…

Crazyone84 · 10/08/2022 20:21

@Justalittlebitblondie yep she's had a slow feeder for years

Butternut do beef and lamb (also veg version and game) if that helps? Pricey though it seems to be gentle on the tummy as it’s just meat and veg.

Sitdowncupoftea · 13/08/2022 01:03

Where did you do allergy test. If it was the vet that did the test did they not recommend a diet. Personally I recommend chappie but ask your vet.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 13/08/2022 01:15

One of our doods has had bouts of colitis as a pup & our vet recommended using ProKolin paste (a probiotic) alongside his antibiotics.

As a bit of a party bonus, his guffing no longer strips paint from the skirting boards. It might be worth calling your vet to see if it might help!

It’s a bit cheaper to buy from Amazon & we keep it in our pet first aid kit (as part of our vet’s recommendations).
